    Heavens to Betsy - Calculated

This is an amazing album. It is one that you can come back to again and again and it never plays out. Corin Tucker's vocals are "off the hook," she has not recorded anything this raw in a while. Its hard to believe that there is only 2 peeps in th...is band. Tracy Sawyer is awesome and if you like H2B, check out Flying Tigers and Motel No-Tell (if you can find any!). The first track, "Nothing Can Stop Me" is the perfect punk grrrl anthem. And the second track, "Decide" is empowering for females in today's society dealing with the traditional marriage thing. On "Stay Away," it is another empowering song for youngsters who are dealing with people. At least it was for me when I was a teen. (Lyric sample - "Do you think that I'd do anything for you?/Do you think that I adore you?/And do you think that this is for you?" The way she sings it is with SO much attitude. Plus Corin really screams 'Stay Away' bigtime. Like Carrie used to do too in E17. (This fan wishes that C&C still yelled more in SK like this today.) "Calculated," the title track, is super dark. "Waitress Hell" is upbeat, any current or post-waitress's anthem, and a great song. The intermission is a surf-like song with no vocals. "Axeman" is a great song. The 'privaledged white girl theme.' The live version on YOYO-A-GOGO 1994 compilation is SO much better though. The comp also has unreleased Beck, Lois, Excuse 17 and Team Dresch's best version of "She's Amazing" so if you don't have this double-album, go to buyolympia.com and get it. "Donating My Body to Science" is reminds me of "God is a Number" by Sleater Kinney. A questioning authory type song about science, sort of. "Terrorist" is violent and amusing, upbeat and creepy. "I'll cut you up gouge out your eyes" Corin sings and then screams "I'm going to kill you" I'm not sure if this song is from the POV of a terrorist or a pissed off person. This is a great song, whatever it is about. Ah, "Complicated," possibly the best H2B song ever! This song speaks volumes for anyone who has ever had releationship troubles. "I don't know how to be good to you/We're too close and you know it too/Nobody has a good enough excuse/I'm just f***ed up and so are you...I love you so much you could hurt me/So I do it first so you won't see me/Laugh it off and I don't feel it/Hard as rocks and nails underneath/...if you want to go just go/and i'll watch you walk away..." Super girl isn't real baby! Corin sings with such passion I sometimes tear up when I hear this song. "White Girl" is in that 'privaged white girl' theme. Its neccessary to have songs that take stands on controversial topics and try to open them up for people to see them in a new light, dont'cha think?. The last song, "Paralyzed" is also great. I don't know what its about but it makes me think of rich white boys, you know the type...who knows what this song is about, its totally punk and totally grrrl and if you don't have this album then you are missing something HUGE! Before her days in Sleater-Kinney, Corin Tucker was belting out screams with her riot-grrl duo, Heavens to Betsy. Along with drummer and bassist Tracy Sawyer, Tucker crafted twelve songs of pissed off, bitter confusion. As with much material in the genre, the lyrics focus on failed relationships and the hurt feelings having emerged as a result. However, one glaring exception is the song, "White Girl", which is a rare introspective look by someone in the indie scene addressing the audience directly about the topic of racism. The rest of the album benefits from a guitar-driven garage music that is paired up with the riot grrl sound of the Northwest from the early 90s. Intensely fierce, even when the tempo slows down, Sawyer keeps the beats tight and Tucker is always brimming over with passion and the kind of power of which many bands in the hardcore scene aren't even capable. Not so much in an overtly masculine manner, but through intelligently refined viciousness transmitted via the app...ropriate musical spectrum. While Heavens to Betsy wasn't as well known as Bikini Kill or Bratmobile (largely due to their short career), it hardly means they didn't have the potential to stack up. That being said, Calculated should be included as essential listening for all fans of riot-grrl. - Kurt Morris, All Music Guide Read more Less
