Cabaret Balkan (1999)

Set in battle-scarred Belgrade, this film explores the devastating effects of violence on the human psyche -- following a seemingly random group of Yugoslavian citizens as they try to survive in a society blasted off of its foundations by war. A vengeful cab driver, a crippled police officer, a group of friends in a gym, a girl on a bus, a con man, a pair of errant lovers, and a roaming performance artist all find their lives interconnected through a bizarre series of events both comic and unsettling. Winner of the Best Picture Award at the Venice International Film Festival and the European Film Awards. Formerly titled "The Powder Keg" and based on a Yugoslavian play.
