Pretty good, but the play is better...

    Pros: Gotta love the songs!

Cons: Changes to the original storyline which seemed awkward at times...

I was recently involved in a production of the play Bye Bye Birdie. Before casting and rehearsals started, I became curious as to what this play was about, and naively thinking the movie was a video of the play, I rented it to watch. I was in for a s...urprise. Afterwards, I sat in shock, wondering why in the world I signed myself up to be in such a silly, inane play. Despite the talent displayed in the movie, the characters all seemed incredibly shallow and superficial. I couldn't see myself playing ANY of the roles. But I stuck with it, and ended up being cast in the part of Rosie (the play focuses on Rosie and Albert much more than the movie does), which was much more fun than I expected. As I soon found out, the play has a storyline that is quite different from its film counterpart. I liked the theatrical version better, personally, but that's just me. A number of great songs from the show were not included in the movie, and I wish there was a film version of the show exactly how it appeared on Broadway. Alas, there is not. But if you have no other way to experience it, then watch the movie. I think it gets a rating of 6 on a 1-10 scale. Read more Less
