    One song stands out

By Brian Rathjen  Aug 8, 2001

I have always enjoyed Steve Wariner's work. Though most of this album's songs aren't terrific (they range from OK to good), one song really stands out in my mind. "Holes in the Floor of Heaven" should rank as one of the best country songs of the past... 20 years or so. The song came out in February 1998, at a time when my hometown was still mourning the deaths of two beautiful teen-age girls in a car accident near Iowa City, IA, just a few weeks earlier (one of them was the homecoming queen of her senior class, the other her best friend). "Holes" is a song that truly meant a lot to me and the community where I hail from, that loved ones such as these two girls can still be "watchin' over you and me" from heaven -- even though they're sadly no longer with us. Thanks, Steve, for coming out with the right song at the right time! Read more Less

Pro Reviews: Burnin' the Roadhouse Down

  • All Music Guide

Burnin' the Roadhouse Down finds Steve Wariner in typically fine form. It may have been five years since his last vocal album, Drive (there was an instrumental album, No More Mr. Nice Guy, in the meantime), but all that time off has revived Wariner, resulting in an album that's the equal of his 1991 high-water mark, I Am Ready. His music may not be as fresh as it was in the early '80s, when he was at the the beginning of his career, but he's become a masterful craftsman, and that's why the album shines. From the affecting ballad "Holes in the Floor of Heaven" to the Garth Brooks duet on the title track, Burnin' the Roadhouse Down is a terrific contemporary country record that finds a journeyman at the top of his form.

Steve Wariner

One of country music's most versatile performers, Steve Wariner grew up in suburban Indianapolis, interested in the Beatles on the radio, as well as Chet Atkins and George Jones, the artists his father listened to most frequently. He started playing music in his dad's band, and by his high school years, he was playing local clubs. At age 17, he caught the ear of Dottie ... Read more
