Can be made to work, but needs some help!

    By dr3wand  Apr 27, 2007

    Pros: Utilities, Removable Anetenna, speed

    Cons: Power Supply, Durability,

I have a number of Buffalo AP's and Ethernet Converters. These are being used in a small WISP. My biggest problem is with the power supply, they are weak and die pretty easy unless they are on a battery back up and a clean surge protector. I have... a small 35' tower I got tired of changing them out on and bought a $20 dollar variable power supply from Fry's and have not had a problem since with those devices anyway. The power supply would often take the radio with it. I have also experienced the Ethernet Converters loosing their association with AP's, or simply cycling every few minutes. The AP logs show this happening. According to the Buff KB articles that can be from the AP finding a clear channel in auto channel mode. I'm not using that, and have scanned for interference. I'm going to get another power supply from Fry's and try that on a few of these to see if it's simply the power supply. Some people have posted problems with WEP, and it's a bit quirky on the interface, but it does work. You need to go to the advanced settings and you can set a 64 bit WEP key just fine. The basic screen may still say 128, but it works. The Buffalo devices are snappy, and perform well when everything is set and you don't have a problem with the power supply. The scan function works well, and I kinda like that they are on a linux kernel. If they only had a better power supply! Read more Less

    Pros: Worked only without encryption

Cons: Faulted product and useless customer service

I returned two units of this product for which the encryption did not work. In fact, when I entered a 10 digit 64bit key I received an error stating 64bit should be a 5 digit key and 128bit a 13 digit key. When set to 128bit and a 13 digit key is ent...ered I received an error stating the key should be 26 digits. The only time this product worked was when the encryption was disabled. Two nights in a row I called customer service to discuss this issue. The first night I waited 45 minutes to reach someone and the second night waiting 57 minutes. Both times I was told I was not doing anything wrong and that they could not help me. Read more Less
