    BROTHERS IN ARMS review.

Mark Knopfler still can play a six-string with power, and the songs are classic. Unlike all their GREATEST HITS packages, you get the untampered "Money For Nothing" (complete with Sting's opening vocals and instrumental fade), the full version of the... beautiful hit "So Far Away", and such classics as "Walk Of Life" and "Brothers In Arms". The uses of synths are in abundance, on the funked up "One World" and, of course, "Money For Nothing" and "Walk Of Life". But Knopfler's songwriting skill is surfaced, and this is, next to 1980's MAKING MOVIES, their most amazing album of that whole decade. Read more Less

    Excellent Song

The first time I heard "Money for nothing" , was like a shock for me , since it was one of the first songs of rock pop music , and now it is part of the classical backin' time.

Brothers in Arms brought the atmospheric, jazzrock inclinations of Love Over Gold into a pop setting, resulting in a surprise international bestseller. Of course, the success of Brothers in Arms was helped considerably by the clever computeranimated video for "Money for Nothing," a sardonic attack on MTV. But what kept the record selling was Mark Knopfler's increased sense of pop songcraft "Money for Nothing" had an indelible guitar riff, "Walk of Life" is a catchy uptempo boogie variation on "Sultans of Swing," and the melodies of the bluesy "So Far Away" and the downtempo, Everly Brothersstyle "Why Worry" were wistful and lovely. Dire Straits had never been so concise or poporiented, and it wore well on them. Though they couldn't maintain that consistency through the rest of the album only the jazzy "Your Latest Trick" and the flinty "Ride Across the River" make an impact Brothers in Arms remains one of their most focused and accomplished albums, and in its succinct pop sense, it'...s distinctive within their catalog. Biography

Dire Straits

Dire Straits emerged during the postpunk era of the late '70s, and while their sound was minimalistic and stripped down, they owed little to punk. If anything, the band was a direct outgrowth of the roots revivalism of pub rock, but where pub rock celebrated good times, Dire Straits were melancholy. Led by guitarist/vocalist Mark Knopfler, the group built their sound up... Read more
