Only one-third of an album
, April 27, 2000Reviewer:
A (Dubious) National Secret - See all A (Dubious) National Secret's reviews This album , Brotherhood , was disappointing to both fans of New Order and their backers , as it sold only modestly . It starts off promisingly enough with the uptempo Paradise before settling into a rather uninteresting smattering of "Two-Chord Wonders" (Weirdo , As It Is When It Was , Broken Promise and Way of Life) . The original version , although not the best version , of Bizarre Love Triangle follows , breaking up the monotony and ending up as the second best on the album . All Day Long comes across a melody in search of a song , or a meaning for that matter . Angel Dust is another near miss , its verse-and-a-half of disjointed lyrics barely lasting halfway through four minutes of some of the group's better rock stylings . Still , it is the album highlight . The disc finishes up with with the rather goofy Every Little Counts , the title possibly a dig at the Depeche Mode song of a similar name... Anyway , there are a few good moments here , but consider carefully before acquiring Brotherhood . Stick to Substance (1987) and Technique (1989) , if this is your first New Order purchase . ... -

Pro Reviews: Brotherhood
| EXPERT RATING: From AMG Reviews One of the leastsynthesized albums in New Order's discography, Brotherhood offers the simultaneous peak of the group's hookfilled songwriting (not just on the single "Bizarre Love Triangle") and Peter Hook's trademark bass work, which takes a plaintive, upperregister lead on highlights like "Weirdo" and "Broken Promise." As usual, the lines dividing organic and electronic are quite fuzzy, resulting in stark drummachine lines for the tender ballad "All Day Long." Sumner's fondness for bizarre, enigmatic lyrics continues apace with songs like the closer ("Every second counts, when I am with you/I think you are a pig, you should be in a zoo"). - John Bush, All Music Guide |
