When it comes to personal laser printers, Brother International Corporation has a reputation for delivering one of the strongest "full-feature, value-added" product lines in the business. The HL-5000 Series continues this tradition. The HL-5000 series offers a print speed of up to 17 pages per minute - 2 pages per minute faster than the models they replace and among the fastest print speeds in their class. In addition, the printer boasts a first-page out speed of less than 12 seconds. Along with the faster print speeds, HL-5000 series offers up to 2400x600 dpi print quality for crisp and clear printing of both text and graphics and features an easy to use control panel with convenient job cancel button.

The HL-5040 is an affordable, high-performance laser printer. In addition to its fast up to 17ppm print speed and up to 2400x600 dpi print quality, the HL-5040 comes standard with 8MB of memory expandable to 136MB. Its 250-sheet paper capacity ensures an ample supply of paper for personal printing, and its single-sheet by-pass tray enables users to easily print card stock, letterhead, and envelopes. An optional second 250-sheet paper tray is also available for the HL-5040 to boost total input to 500 sheets.

    Pros: It's Inexpensive

    Cons: Feed System

    The Manual feeder does not put the paper through straight, so forget about using this machine for labels. I even exchanged the machine thinking I had a bad one. The second was just as bad. I called the factory and they basically said to just retur...n it. On the tray feed, the paper is constantly getting jammed. It is by far the most frustrating printer I have ever used.     I like the fact that you can print on both sides by printing odd pages on one side, then re-inserting the paper, and printing even pages on the other side. The only drawback on this printer is that it uses flashing lights instead of a digital display.... Read more Less

    Brother's HL-5040 is endowed with good speed and produces very attractive print output, but it skimps on memory. The HL-5040's strongest point is its 13.1-ppm text-printing speed--1.7-ppm faster than the average of the small-office units we've seen. In addition, this model generated very clean, even text and gray-scale graphics with reasonable detail and little graininess. Brother also deserves praise for its on-screen documentation (though not for its skimpy, disorganized printed documentation); the CD includes a thorough manual and a collection of videos that show how to operate and maintain the printer.
