  • All Music Guide

Trumpeter Chet Baker is in above average form on this Paris date, using a quartet that includes pianist Phil Markowitz, bassist Jean-Francois Jenny Clark and drummer Jeff Brillinger. Originally recorded for the obscure French label Sonopresse and leased for the U.S. by the now-defunct Inner City company, this little-known outing finds Baker taking an ok vocal on "Oh You Crazy Moon" and stretching out musically on five selections including the title tune (an original by Richard Beirach), Wayne Shorter's "Black Eyes" and the standard "How Deep Is The Ocean." Chet Baker completists and fanatics will want this one but more general collectors have at least 100 more readily available recordings to choose from.

As a trumpeter, he had a generally restrained, intimate playing style and he attracted attention beyond jazz for his photogenic looks and singing. But his career was marred by drug addiction. Baker's father, Chesney Henry Baker Sr., was a guitarist who was forced to turn to... Read more
