Upon leaving Discharge in 1983, guitarist and Stoke-on-Trent native Tony "Bones" Roberts formed his own post-hardcore metal band, Broken Bones, recruiting drummer Baz, bassist Oddy, and vocalist Nobby to complete the lineup. It is unclear whether drummer Cliff and bassist Terry Roberts (Bones' brother) were the same musicians working under different names, but they soon replaced Baz and Oddy.
