Pro Reviews: Bring Me Closer

  • All Music Guide

It's entirely fitting that Richard Davis found a home on Swayzak's 240 Volts label, given that his 2002 album deserved the same amount of attention as Swayzak's Dirty Dancing, released the same year. Each of the four tracks on this 12" hold up to the high standard Davis set for himself early on. Stylistically, the tracks are hardly a departure for him; despite similar tones and emotions a nocturnal, chilling unease, formed with a keen sense of minimalist dynamics these are far from retreads. Lead track "Bring Me Closer" is his best work yet, set apart from everything else released in 2003 through its reverse string tugs and a druggy, halfawake vocal line. Each of the remaining tracks would be welcomed on a successor to Davis' fulllength debut.
