Bridging the Divide
Note:
In this autobiography, Senator Edward Brooke, who represented the state of Massachusetts for two terms during the 1960s and '70s, recalls that tumultuous time in American history, and his role in it. Brooke is remembered both as a groundbreaker--an African-American with many "firsts" in politics and life--and a skilful negotiator who was able to bring the Senate and the House into agreement on key issues. Brooke shares many anecdotes of those times as he reflects on politics then and now, the continuing importance of public service, and the need to rise above our differences and find common goals. He is also candid about his private life, which included a difficult divorce and an experience with cancer.
