Singer and percussionist John Mars was working with a jazz group called Broomer, Mars Smith in the late '70s, when he decided to form his own band on the side, a rock band he named Brian's Children. Other members of his little rock excursion included guitarist and bassist Dave M. Templeton, drummer Todd "Teddy" Fury, and one late-joiner, bassist Eddy Scuffle.
