Who is more influential? No one

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Sep 14, 2000

Before Brian Wilson, rock and roll was children's music. He - almost single handedly - brought rock and roll from being a novel, fun type of dance music to music that could blow you away with its (a) depth (b) complexity, (c) beauty, (d) sophisticat...ion (e) introspection and (f) maturity. Listen to Pet Sounds and get back to me. Sure this record is a shadow of that greatness, but the shadow of greatness is better than the presence of mediocrity. Read more Less

    A home run!

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Sep 13, 2000

It was great when originally released in 88, and it is great now! The remastering and bonus tracks make it worth the purchase, even if you still have the original CD! Forget what passes for the "Beach Boys" these days, stick with the Master!

He never left, but it sure felt like it.

Anyone who hasn't decided to purchase the recent re-issue of Brian Wilson's first solo outing should definitely reconsider. At least if they're willing to give it a fair shot in the right context, that is.It's not perfect, and it doesn't stand up to... Pet Sounds (nor some of the post-Pet Sounds songs that trickled out of him), but it's a great showcase for Brian's abilities. The problems most people have are the sound quality (pretty typical 80's fare underneath all those voices and instruments), and the state in which Brian created it (under Dr. Landy's care). But it stands up beyond all that, and you can definitely tell that the genius is and was still there 12 years back. Songs like "Melt Away" and "Rio Grande" prove beyond a doubt that he's still got it, while songs like "Walkin' The Line" move along much simpler...but still quite good. All in all, it's a great record that's got a few rough edges to it. It's still a testament to the man, and it's well worth the $15 you'll spend on it! Read more Less

    Not the Best

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Sep 7, 2000

Of course, I bought it again anyway. It has its moments, but there are some excruciatingly bad songs here too. I love Brian, but this is NOT his best work. Go get "I Just Wasn't Made For These Times" instead - it has better versions of the two best ...tracks (Love and Mercy, Melt Away) on this album in addition to reworkings of his great stuff. There is a live album available from his website that should be worth getting too. Read more Less

    Brian Wilson is the greatest!!!!!

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Sep 4, 2000

I've heard the original album released in 1988 and it's great. My favorite songs are "Let It Shine" and "Walking the Line". Very powerful and upbeat, but then he slows it down the "One for the Boys" which is a Beach Boys-like harmony and "There's So... Many". The typical Brian Wilson album, all true fans need to own it. Brian is Back

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Feb 13, 2000

What a comeback!Either heralded or despised(as most of BW's post Pet Sounds work is),Brian Wilson 88 was a tour de force for Brian:Love and Mercy's goodwill, the grandeur of Melt Away and There's So Many, the "Smile-like" Rio Grande, and the amazing wa...ll of sound backround vocals of Brian and friend/collaborator Andy Paley are awesome. Most fans dislike the album for the vocal processing used to make each note sound perfect.Used more extensivelly on his previous project(Beach Boys 85),it is a bit irksome. But that's overlooking the harmonic riches found throughout this album.Brian sounds much happier on his latest disc(Imagination),but the production technique found throughout this disc is far more Brian then the sterile adult contemporary landscapes of his most recent outing.Released in 88,this cd lets fans know Brian was indeed back, but sadly this would be the only BW solo album released til 1995.Definetely worth seeking out.
