    Pros: superb musicianship, amazing voice, beautiful lyrics

    Cons: none - want more!

    This album took me completely by surprise. I was expecting it to be good because of hearing about Brett, but it moved me so profoundly, in such a compelling way, that I wanted to rush out into the streets & tell everyone around that they were missing... something huge if they hadn't listened to Brett! The words to Oh The Glorious, the sheer beauty of Desert Sunrise, the political challenge of All We Have - were stand out faves - but really, all the songs are necessary parts of a perfect music collection - and music that needs to be heard around the world.     Folkie singersongwriter Brett Dennen's selftitled debut has the easygoing lope and world music influences of Jack Johnson or Dave Matthews, and his voice is oddly similar to that of Tracy Chapman, with the same slightly nasal quality and occasionally bluesy inflections. Though Brett Dennen is an agreeable listen, perfect for any antichain coffeehouse of independent bookstore, its lack of genuinely catchy tunes or thoughtprovoking lyrics means it tends to slip quickly from memory. The main exception is the thoughtful ballad "All We Have," which features Dennen's most affecting vocal. Too much of the rest is simply pleasant.

Youthful West Coast singer/songwriter Brett Dennen first drew attention in 2004 with the single "Desert Sunrise." The tune, with its easy groove and soulful phrasing, garnered enough spins on KCRW to warrant the release of his selftitled debut the following year.
