Combining vintage rockers (Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis) with new wave flashes (X, Dexy's Midnight Runners), Breathless makes for one ripping movie soundtrack. Even the requisite noodling portion contains merit, as curious kooks Eno and Fripp (obvious fans of the original French flick) keep things interesting. The film's director, Jim McBride, seems to be an avid pop fan, going on to continue his Jerry Lee Lewis obsession in Great Balls of Fire, and then dramatizing Marvin Lee Aday in Meat Loaf: To Hell and Back. An intoxicating mix of old and new, Breathless oozes the sleek neon cool the early '80s always strove for but rarely achieved.
