Pros: Mary Finds Her Inner Peace on Her 2005 CD
Cons: Not Quite the Classic That Was "My Life."
Mary J. Blige doesn't pick her album titles by accident. "No More Drama," "Share My World," and "My Life" reveal a chapter of the stormy life of Ms. Blige, who had to endure a string of adversities including drug use, soured relationships, and abuse. But if the title of her 2005 album is any indication, she's come even closer to the inner peace that seems to have eluded her for much of her 35 years. On "The Breakthrough," the Queen of Hip Hop Soul delivers a reliably strong mix of r&b: some of it gritty, some of it polished, but all of it is good. The kickoff single "Be Without You" is a well-deserved radio hit, and other notables are "Baggage" and the achingly beautiful "Father in You." The head-turner has to be her duet with U2. Together, they cover the band's 1991 ballad "One," and Blige's smoky delivery reveals a newfound soulfulness that even Bono can't match. "The Breakthrough" is already Blige's biggest-selling album in years, following her much-ballyhooed reunion with P.Diddy on her last disc "Love and Life." 14 years since her debut, Mary J. shows no sign of slowing down, and this latest disc shows that she still has a long career ahead of her.
Pros: Best Recording I've Listened To
Cons: Powerful Vocals & Soulful Arrangements
I recently got a copy of this album and could not believe what I've heard. I am a real big fan of Mary J. Blige's music and have all her CD's in my collection.
Her voice really shines on tracks like "Father In You", "Can't Get Enough" & the Aretha-esque "I Found my Everything"( with a unique Stax Volt like arrangement & killer powerhouse vocal).
Her duet version of the U2 classic "One" really stands out as well. For her to take on a U2 classic and put her own spin to it is really killer.
A must have to your collection!!
Pros: Every track is hot
Cons: None
If you are a Mary fan you need this in your life. Every track is hot, and of course there's always something to dance to.
Pros: Powerful
Cons: None
All of the songs are good. Seems you can relate to all of them. She aint nothin but the truth. Hats OFF!!
Pros: Everything Is Great
Cons: Nothing
This album is one of my favorites it's great, its fun soulful and I think it's absolutly GREAT!!
Pros: Betta Sangin..Less Hollerin for no reason, guests, Jay-Z, Raphael
Cons: Song with U2
Its jus sumthin about Mary huh! She been in da game for ova 10 years and this time she is on FIYAHH. Heck she need to be after that wack 'Love and Life' joint that Puffy ruined. Anyways, ya already know about 'Live Without You', but check out 'Can't Hide From Luv' (w Jay-Z), 'Good Woman Down', 'No One Will Do', 'Ain't Really Love', and theres more fo shizee!! And Mary even sound better this time..not so much off key screamin!Look yall need to support Mary on this joint and if it wasn't for that song on here with U2, it would be a perfect 10. Queen P scores it 8 out of 10! A Winner BABY! Toodles!
Pros: Mary's voice has improved, good lyrics & music, production
Cons: The duet with U2, needs a few bonus tracks!
, but....., December 20, 2005
...Where is Mary's duet with Jamie Foxx titled 'Love Changes' ??? How About 'Don't Worry', featuring The Game ?? These 2 songs would make 'The Breakthrough' even better, so I urge Mary's fans to remove that crappy track with U2 ('One'), and add these 2 songs to this CD for a BETTER BREAKTHROUGH. 'Love Changes' flows perfectly after 'Ain't Really Love', and 'Don't Worry' is a great as a bonus track following 'So Lady'. I also added Mary's live remake of Earth Wind & Fire's 'Can't Hide Love' at the end of the CD.
As for Mary, I am impressed with the improvement of her vocals, and after 13 years, she's still bringing IT with so much passion. IMO, 'The Breakthrough' is a much needed improvement over the Puff Daddy reunion 'Love & Life' (Whew..Hot Mess!), and it may eventually be mentioned as a Mary classic ala 'My Life' & 'Mary'. Serious fans are urged to also visit Target & get their exclusive Mary CD ('My Collection Of Love Songs..Live').
Good Job Mary & Welcome Back!
Chaka's World
Pros: Lyrics and Music
Cons: none
This CD, as if i could have excpected different, Was perfect. Mary conects with every women and man and puts the lyrics together to touch your soul. This CD is the best ever.
Pros: Everything
Cons: Nothing
This cd is the most outstanding cd I've heard in a loooooong time. From day one I was hooked. The songs...omg. The songs are so real...the lyrics...the music. Everything. I am at a loss of words when it comes to this great piece of work. Mary has really outdone herself on this one. It is by far her best cd ever to date. No question about it. And that U2 duet, on fire! At first I didn't like it..but after I listened to the words of the song, lertimercy, I was hooked. She really and truly rocked it on that cut. Everytime I listen to the cd, I find that I fall in love with yet another song that I wasn't initially in love with. lol. The first 4 cuts I loved off the bat along with tracks 6, 9, and 10. But now, I'm so feeling tracks 8, 11, and the last one. If you haven't gotten this cd, sleep no more.
Pros: Mary J. Blige
Cons: None
Two thumbs up for Mary's Breakthrough. Another hit filled record. Music was great, vocals were nice. I did feel that the record had too many tracks. I usually want more from an artist, but towards Breakthrough's ending, I kept thinking "wow she's still playing". So a little long but good.
Pros: All songs
Cons: none
Mary J Blige's real breakthrough occurred with her 1992 debut, What's the 411? issuing comparisons with Aretha Franklin and Chaka Khan.
But Blige's singing is not just about lung-power, she is capable of nuance and deftly moves between R'n'B, hip-hop and soul.
The Breakthrough is, without a doubt, her finest album; picking up on the intensity of 2001's No More Drama but, for once, the histrionics are on hold and Blige is more interested in offering consistently great songs.
The cast of collaborators is cut to the essential - The Black Eyed Peas' Will.I.Am helps the catchy About You and Raphael Saadiq sounds positively resplendent on So Lady. The success of The Breakthrough is clearly the happiness that Blige has found in her personal life.
For years critics have hailed her as an amazing voice, only to condemn the overwrought songs. Newly married, Blige is far more content than she was on 2003's overly contemplative Love And Life.
The Aretha comparisons are still valid: I Found my Everything is Mary J's You Make me Feel Like a Natural Woman and she further evokes the queen of soul's interpretive powers when she collaborates with no less than U2 for a version of their One; Johnny Cash it ain't, but fans will love hearing Mary J do her thing with this ubiquitous anthem.
On previous Blige albums the ballads have been the weakness, they have dragged, or pulled too heavy on heartstrings. This time the ballads are the absolute gems and when she does funk it up (Can't Hide From Luv, No One Will Do) the productions are smart and sassy. Blige could in fact be the new Tina Turner.
The Breakthrough is slick and capable of making a fair play of the pop market, but for once Mary J has imbued her album with that vital organ she sings about so often; yes, The Breakthrough is full of heart.
Pros: come on!!!
Cons: COME ON!!!!!!
two words, well actually four: a plethora of grammys!! NUFF SAID!!!!!
Pros: Lyric content had my blown away
Cons: Some of the guest appearences
Mary is my favorite R&B artist, I have all her albums, and this one is most definently Mary's best. This one, is a must have........what you sitting there for, go get it!
Pros: Mary's vocals, lyrics, and music has really evolved. Lots of growth.
Cons: The U2 Bono remake, she could have done without that song. She should have added the bonus tracks on the US release of the album.
Mary has come a long way. Evolving and setting trends her way, starting with her 1992 debut What's The 411? With a strong bluesy voice, soul stirring emtoions, and a passion that can evoke on woman's pains, joy's, happiness, and everything in between. That's the reason we fell in love with Mary, she can talk to us as we go through the same life up's and downs.
14 years into her career, Mary has sustained. Although her last album was a bit of disappointment to the fans and a bomb on the industry scale, Mary has more than made up for the blunder. The Breakthrough along with the rapid album sales prove it.
The lead single "Be Without You" finds Mary singing a powerful tune about professing her happy love despite the rough waters of the relationship. While "Good Woman Down" and "Take Me As I Am" is Mary's signature powerful, redemptive anthems to help her troubled people. "Baggage" finds Mary apologizing to her significant other about bringing past hurt into their relationship.
With minimal guest appearences, more grown up lyrics, and well arranged musical backdrops. Mary has more than made up for what was the blunder of Love & Life, and has reclaimed her titled as The Queen Of Hip Hop/Soul.
Pros: Trully Excellent!!!!
Cons: Trully Excellent!!!!
A trully excellent CD. Mary's in good form (excellent vocals, lyrics, rhythm & beats). Her new single Be Without You is simply excellent. There are lots of goodies on here. A highly recommended CD!!!!
Pros: A Smoot Comeback
Cons: Some Songs Lack
The album is overall good although some songs do lack the HIT adreniline rush, the rest of the cd makes up for that. Overall, Mary made a great comeback and she needs not rest and needs to keep comin'.
Pros: Strong beats, hot lyrics
Cons: Calabs not too hot
