  • All Music Guide

Ithamara Koorax is a very talented jazz singer. However this collection of performances from a threeyear period, although containing the spirit of jazz, falls more into World and Brazilian folk music. Actually much of the music is uncategorizable with lenghy vamps, some eccentric moments and more than its share of surprises. While there is a core group on many of the selections that usually includes drummerpercussionist Dom Um Romao, the personnel changes from tracktotrack. Dom Um Romao's occasional vocals are quirky, particularly compared to Koorax's and, while the musicianship is consistently high, not many of the individual solos are that memorable. The real reason to acquire this set is to experience the versatility of Ithamara Koorax, whose voice excels no matter what the setting.
