    Fly like a "bird."

Pros: Must-own second CD from Amel.

    Cons: None.

Go ahead. Run and get the latest by any of the corporate-manufactured pop stars in the Billboard Hot 100. If you want to blend in with the rest of the crowd, get any of their CDs. But if your tastebuds savor for something a little more complex, origi...nal, and refreshing, then you'll be in good hands with Amel Larrieux. "Bravebird, her second solo album, is a bold step forward from "Infinite Possibilities" and incorporates a wide range of genres that make it difficult to categorize the onetime Groove Theory singer. From the soulful swagger of the opener "For Real," to the killer piano-flavored ballad "Beyond," the gritty "Givin' Something Up," and the bass-heavy standout "Congo," Larrieux makes a great display of her talents as singer, songwriter, and producer. It's a shame that Sony parted ways from her after the disappointing sales of her debut, "Infinite Possibilities," for they truly left behind a very talented artist. "Bravebird" was the first great album released in 2004. You can't give this CD less than five stars and NOT look stupid. Read more Less

    Bravebird - Amel Larrieux

Pros: Beautiful Body of Work as a Whole

    Cons: none

Amel Larrieux is a little known artist outside of the R&B/Soul curcit but after hearing this album you will wonder why she hasn't been embraced more by the main-stream. A highly intelligent album Ameil will suprise you with her "Mini Rippert...on" vocal scale soars to heights that would make even Mariah Carey jealous. I would list the best tracks but all of them are good but if you're not convinced to go out to buy the whole album yet check out these tracks as a sample: "For Real", "Dear to Me", "Bravebird" and "All I Got" (either version) Read more Less

Pro Reviews: Bravebird

  • All Music Guide

Similar to the likeminded Alana Davis, the soulful and serene Amel Larrieux only made it a couple years into the 2000s before having majorlabel support pulled out from under her. Released on her own Blisslife label, Bravebird is an excellent album that suggests her unceremonious dropping from Epic had nothing to do with the quality of her music and everything to do with the label's unwillingness to find a marketing niche for this cosmopolitan wanderer. To say she's somewhere between Alicia Keys and Norah Jones ignores her unequivocal Greenwich Village roots and the smell of incense that must follow wherever she goes. Larrieux is like a more cerebral and matured Wendy Lisa sharing the duo's love of glistening pianos, sweet waterfalls of strings, and melodies that meander but never lose their way. Bravebird is an incredibly layered album with only the deep grooves and Larrieux's sweet voice shining through on the first listen. Dig deeper and there's the slick and smart production, excel...lent arrangements, and some truly poignant moments. The bittersweet "Giving Something Up" is the highlight, pointing out the idealismhangover that folks can experience past their twenties. The slow caress of "For Real," the righteous callandresponse in "All I Got," and the easy house music bounce of the title track make them all close runnersup. "Sacred" comes off as a slow amateur night at the coffee shop, but that's it for slipups. Otherwise well written and well executed, Bravebird finds Larrieux leading the new breed of adult alternative artists emancipated from big business and allowed to freely develop their craft. - David Jeffries, All Music Guide Read more Less
