Pro Reviews: Boys Don't Cry
| EXPERT RATING: From AMG Reviews Boys Don't Cry combines the finer moments of Three Imaginary Boys with the singles released around the same time -- the title track, "Jumping Someone Else's Train," and the often misinterpreted "Killing an Arab," as well as "Plastic Passion." The addition of the singles makes this the perfect encapsulation of the band's early days. - Chris Woodstra, All Music Guide |

The Cure Biography
Out of all the bands that emerged in the immediate aftermath of punk rock in the late '70s, the Cure was one of the most enduring and popular. Led through numerous incarnations by guitarist/vocalist Robert Smith (b. April 21, 1959), the band became n...Full The Cure Biography

Pros: The uniqueness of the band
Cons: The order of the songs and some songs could be misinterpreted
Why does Robert Smith himself underrate this album? It is a classic in its own way. From the opening title track to The Three Imaginary Boys there is a certain charm that only belongs to "The Cure". Here are my reviews of most of the songs on this album:
A-I-R-O!
...
Plastic Passion: This could be one of the first records that show the trademark Cure sound. The music sounds as if it is played back. There is a nice little riff towards the end of the song.
10:15 Saturday Night: The best moment on this album is when he sings the tap drips, , drip, drip, drip, drip, drip.... It has also got some lovely guitar playing by Robert. I think it is this drip, drip effect that influenced the song, "A Forest" from their next album "17 Seconds". There is a certain similarity between the drip, drip effect he has used on this song and the "again and again and again...effect Robert used in "A Forest".
Jumping Someone Else's Train: Very good up-tempo song!
So What: This I think is arguably the most difficult song Robert had ever sung! Very unusual track, I must say. The highlight is Robert's vocals. It is typically English
Fire in Cairo: This is a very catchy track. I bet that after you listen to it, you will want to sing like Robert...F-I-R-E-I-N-C-
Another Day: It is very poetic and imaginative...winter in water colours.
Grinding Halt: The most up-tempo track of the entire album. It is reggae music at its finest. Why wasn't this track used as the last? It would have been a nice way to end the album.
Three Imaginary Boys: This track along with "Another Day" shows the sign of things to come. The Cure would become famous for the elements present in this song. Also it is very gothic, poetic and imaginative. Lots of echo-laden music.
I would recommend this album to people who don't have any of The Cure albums. This is the album to start with. But if possible you can also try "Three Imaginary Boys" album as I believe it has got some songs which are not there on this. Also you can try "The Greatest Hits of Cure".
By the way- Happy Birthday, Robert!
