Undeniably touching
Pros: Moving, powerful, realistic, beautifully made
Cons: Not for the weak
This film is heart-wrenching. The story of Brandon Teena (aka Teena Brandon) is beautifully told even though it was a tremendous tragedy. Hillary Swank deserves every bit of praise for the amazing role she played. The direction and the actors really made Brandon Teena's powerful and very moving story come to life. It makes you realize what a diverse world we live in, and to consider everyone's frame of mind, even if it might not fit perfectly into yours. This film is very highly reccommended, but beware: it's not for children or pre-teens, it's too graphic. Save this one for the adults.

Pros: Very realistic
Cons: I wish they had added some more info at the end of what else happened with this case. For example, why did Lana return to a town that brought her nothing but night mares
I found that after watching the movie "Boys Don't Cry," I was so disturbed by how Brandon Teena was abused and killed; I couldn't sleep for hours. I cried. I recently met someone on the Internet who feels she's a man inside a woman's body, and the very thought that she could be abused and possibly be killed like Brandon Teena scared and angered me. Nobody asked to be born a transsexual; all they want is to be free to love, and truly loved in return. Hillary Swank, I thought was herself a lesbian, but after reading things about her work, she is a heterosexual woman happily married to Chad Lowe. I am amazingly impressed by her perfect performance in "Boys Don't Cry." I'm glad she won an Oscar for her performance. Unfortunately, this was based on a true story; and after having watch the movie, I wished I could have known the real Teena Brandon. I still want to understand her and be a real friend she could turn to for support. This movie opened my eyes to a whole new world for me, and giving a new feeling about an area in life that will stick with me for the rest of my life. Thank you Hillary Swank for a very realistic and excellent performance of an ugly and brutal side of mankind's hatred while opening my heart to care about the Brandon Teena's of the world.

I just went to lincoln Nebraska this past week and i saw Teena Brandon's grave and i have to say that it was a great trip! Buti think this movie is so heart warming and painful to watch. If you like this movie i should suggest The Brandon Teena Story it is a good documentry about the real Brandon! i Have both on dvd!

This movie is a great dipiction of a story that too often in our culture happens and is forgotten about. This movie puts it in your face and makes you be the judge. Although it is not a complete factorial dipection of the events that happened in 1993 with Brandon Teena, it allows the viewer a glimpse into the mind of a person who was different and had the strength to be himself. Hillary Swank is awesome in this movie. She was a very convincing male. It is definately one of my all time favorites.

Never let it be said that Hilary Swank did not deserve her Academy Award, 100%. Her performace in Boys Don't Cry was one of the most devastating I have seen, to date. This tragic, true story, broke my heart. The filming was breathtaking, the cast was brilliant, and I am not exaggerating when I say that this movie was stuck in my head for weeks afterward. This is one of the single most haunting films ever made.

Absolutely devestating. Haunting and beautifuly photographed, the night skies, the lights of the factory in the small town, the darkened roads, all vivid to the eye. Hilary Swank gives a performance so physicaly involved that she is the character she plays, and you know from the first few minutes that she is headed for a terrible fall. Her bravery and courage, and most of all her innocence is a crushing thing to see destroyed by the hatred and fear of a small town. Chloe Sevigney is also brilliant as her compasionate friend and lover. Completely heartbreaking, painful to watch, but essential viewing none the less. I hope it makes people think twice before they try and hurt the things they refuse to understand. For those who try and live and let live, a better world awaits.

This is one of the better alternative lifestyle movies I have seen crowned by an exceptional performance by Hilary Swank. I have to say I was not as moved by it as I expected overall though...

Hilary Swank's performance was absolutely awsome. I'm glad she won the Academy Award for best actress. She portrayed her character very well. I didn't know about Brandon Teena until I read about the movie. How awful for the real Brandon Teena to have lived her young life in misery. Hilary brought out that misery in her performance. It's hard to believe she's the same person who came out in the last Karate Kid movie.

Teena story until I saw a 20/20 special on her/him. I instantly became interested and HAD to see the movie. When I saw this I was amazed at how real it was and how sad it can be for people people with a SIC (sexual identity crisis) and I wanted to read the book. I have ever seen.I've read the book
"All She Wanted" at least 4 times, I
have become obsessed with Brandon Teena.
I think the only thing he did wrong was
lie. But I know and understand where he
was coming from. We are living in a scary
world, and he was desperately trying to live
his life in peace. No he wasn't perfect,
but he didn't deserve to be killed.
This movie was touching, and dealed
with an issue very much alive in
our world of "small minds" and I for
one am sorry that it took this event

Amazing, imaginative production. If anything, it benefits from its low-budgetness.
Superstar performance by Hilary Swank. She presents an imperfect, dishonest and completely irresistible character.
Awesome performances by others, too.
Intense without being morose.

This film did the one thing that it needed to right, and the rest just followed: it didn't martyr Teena Brandon. Kimberly Pierce created a character so real and so honest, showing the audience every side of her personality, and instead of creating a martyr introduced us to someone who lied, cheated, and lived a thin line: but someone who we fell in love with as well. This is not only the most important film of 1999, but also one of the best.

Holywood made this story blah. Amazing how good acting, decent writing and a powerful story can not combine to make a good movie. The documentary made me care about all of these people, this movie didn't.

I saw on a nightly television news show the real story long before I saw the movie. I believe the movie portrayed the story, as much as I heard at least, pretty accurately. To be quite honest, the ending of this movie is quite poignant. A 4 because of storyline, characters, acting.

I wanted to see this movie because it's based on real events and
the story is so poignant. However, the film fell short of my
expectations and failed to allow me to relate to the main
character. The biggest problem is the lack of background info
provided about Brandon (Teena). I felt as if the opening scene
should have been twenty minutes into the movie. We don't have
any idea what her life is like growing up until half way through
when we get a glimpse of her past arrests. We never get any
explanation for this trouble with the law, however. She mentions
her father died and she never knew him, but any information
about her mother is strangely absent. We don't even know how
old she is until the end, and even then they say she's nineteen even
though the date of her death puts her at twenty-one. All of this
lack of information leaves the viewer not really relating to what
motivates her to do the things she does. We can all assume that
growing up trans-gender in Nebraska was no picnic, but not
having any idea about the previous abuses and/or general
experiences she suffered makes it hard for the viewer to
sympathize with her situation. It's this lack of
sympathy/understanding that is the weak point of the film.
Certainly what happened to Brandon Teena was a hideous crime,
but after watching this movie I wonder what motivated her to get
herself in such a dangerous situation in the first place. Conversely,
we get a good feel for Lana's situation, and fully understand why
she would want to grasp onto someone (anyone who loved her)

I've seen this movie twice, and i found it to be one of the best movies i have ever seen. The story is so important and it should be told to as many people as possible. Hilary Swank is just amazing. I thought this way before the Oscar-"Hype" she is getting now. Hilary Swank does deserve the top award. The story isn't completely factual to the real life event, but that is understandable, this real event is so tragic. I think is movie is another stepping stone for us to understand sexuality(in this case gender or sexual identity) and love between us all. I strongly advise this movie to everyone. 10-out-of-10 and two thumbs up.
