Jazz guitarist Bobby Broom was born on January 18, 1961, and raised in New York City. Introduced to jazz at an early age (via Charles Earland's Black Talk), Broom took up the guitar shortly thereafter -- resulting in playing in off-Broadway productions and an invite to join Sonny Rollins' band (he had to turn down the latter, choosing to listen to his parents' advice and complete high school before pursuing music full-time). After attending the renowned Berklee College of Music in Boston, Broom returned back to New York, where he issued his first solo album, 1981's Clean Sweep, and worked with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, trumpeter Tom Browne, Dave Grusin, and several years after his initial invite, with Sonny Rollins. In 1987, Broom was invited to join Miles Davis' band, which he accepted, but only lasted for a handful of performances. After playing alongside Kenny Burrell in his Jazz Guitar Band for several years, Broom relocated to Chicago where he formed his own trio, performed several nights a week in clubs, and has issued further solo releases: 1995's No Hype Blues, 1997's Waitin' and Waitin', and a pair in 2001, Modern Man and Stand.
