From 1949-71, Bob Weinstock, the head of Prestige Records, was very active in the jazz world. In the 1950s, Prestige recorded most of the top stars of modern jazz, frequently in jam session settings. Although criticized for the lack of rehearsal time (as opposed to Blue Note's approach), most of the Prestige dates were reasonably well planned and still sound exciting today.
