the hook
Are you tired of yawning while at the same time complaining to yourself about the lack of great music today. Are you tired of having air-play shoved down your throat by "chain" radio stations? Are you tired of publicity stunts to promote a new "trend" or to salvage an old trend (Britney and Madonna kissing). Bonamassa may be your "savior."
bon-a-who?
According to an interview with Bonamassa’s father (Len Bonamassa), “By the age of six and a half Joe was able to play, almost note for note, Stevie Ray Vaughan’s songs.” By the age of 13 he’d opened and jammed on-stage BB King and by the age of 14 he was signed to a major label.
This week, at the age of 26, Bonamassa has the #1 Blues album on Billboard (Sept. 2003). Eight time Grammy award winner & record producer Phil Ramone said, “Prodigies are far and few between, I saw Joe take an audience apart.”
i'm experienced
I saw Bonamassa live several weeks ago - - he flat out ripped - - I was amazed. Rolling Stone(d) Magazine - - did not recognize Bonamassa in a recent 100 top guitarists article. Shame on them - - like Michael Jordan's, Jr. High School basketball coach not selecting MJ for the team - - Rolling Stone blew it too. Period.
the review
BLUES DELUXE (Released August 26, 2003) - screams with soul and originality while covering some of the all-time great blues hits, ever. Some might contend Bonamassa's covers are not as good as the original versions. But that would be like saying Hendrix's cover of Dylan's "All Along The Watchtower" was second rate - - NOT! Joe Bonamassa honors the blues with his tribute to a great American sound with Blues Deluxe.
the album
You Upset Me Baby - immediately sets the tone of the album. Shucking, jiving blues in tune with Bonamassa's standard, stellar guitar playing.
Burning Hell - old school blues with a tornado twist. This songs winds the listener up like a top, releasing energy in a whirlwind at the end.
Blues Deluxe - Bonamassa gives the entire fret board a workout on this - the title track. Pure intuition and inspiration here.
Man of Many Words - vocals start a fire - - Bonamassa follows up with a kerosene guitar - - bonfire of pure blues.
Woke Up Dreaming - acoustic song - - you'll swear up and down Bonamassa has two other guitar players playing on this track - NOPE - its just him - saw him do this live - totally amazing guitar work.
I Don't Live Anywhere - great song for chill'n. Ray Charles feel to it.
Wild About You Baby - rock'n George Thorogood feel.
Long Distance Blues - light'n quick guitar work - then slow silky blues - full meal deal here.
Pack It Up - fabulous (as in Thunderbirds) sound. The only disappointment on the album.
Left Overs - guitar strings hop, jump and jive before being stretched to a scream on this instrumental track.
Walking Blues - nitty and gritty blues, driving beat. Yeah, your basic blues but served with a little blue umbrella (something special).
Mumbling Word - time to slide. Howling Wolf and Muddy tribute to the roots of blues.
the end
Blues Deluxe is not an ending or even a beginning. Blues Deluxe is a milepost marking the third step (3rd album) of an artist who will be revered by your children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Get Bonabaptized before it's too late.... ...

Pro Reviews: Blues Deluxe
| EXPERT RATING: From AMG Reviews Joe Bonamassa's first solo release in 2000 A New Day Yesterday paid homage to classic '70s blues/hard rock. Three years later with the release of Blue's Deluxe, the young guitarist is doing the same with the roots of the blues. Eight of the 12 tracks are cover versions of B.B. King "You Upset Me Baby," John Lee Hooker "Burning Hell," Buddy Guy "Man of Many Words," Elmore James "Wild About You Baby," T-Bone Walker "Long Distance Blues," Freddie King "Pack It Up," Albert Collins "Left Overs," and Robert Johnson "Walking Blues." The problem with about half of the disc is the difficulty of covering this type of material without being able to add much to it. At this relatively early stage in Bonamassa's discography, it may have been a better idea if he would have mixed 70 originals with a few covers instead of vice-versa. It's obvious Bonamassa has devoured this material but his take on "Burning Hell" for instance doesn't come close to matching the strength and realism of the original. The album's strong points are the three originals, "Woke Up Dreaming," "I Don't Live Anywhere," "Mumbling Word," and the Jeff Beck Group's "Blues Deluxe" featuring smokin' guitar pyrotechnics. Still, thanks to musicians like Joe Bonamassa, the more traditional blues artists covered on this disc continue to gain just as much exposure with younger artists as Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughan or Jimi Hendrix. - Al Campbell, All Music Guide |
