    Smooth like velvet

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Feb 24, 2001 | 1 out of 1 found this Blue Velvet (1986) review helpful

Perhaps the best of Lynch's films in my opinion. I watched this one on the big screen at the venerable Alabama Theatre in Birmingham, AL, and was awestruck. Lynch is an incredible filmmaker, and this opus is magnificent. Do not take LSD before wat...ching. Watch for the humor that comes out of nowhere. When asking MacLachlan what beverage he prefers, MacLachlan replies "Heineken." Hopper replies: "Heineken? F**k Heineken!! Pabst Blue Ribbon!" Sitting in the balcony, I almost spit my Budweiser onto the stoned hippies below. Great flick. Definitely weird, but hey, it's David Lynch. Read more Less

An Undergraduate Film Student's C- Master Thesis

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Aug 22, 2007

    Pros: Lighting, Sound Design

    Cons: Acting, Script, Cinematography, Direction

I felt like the movie was an undergraduate film student's C- master thesis. The sound design was admittedly excellent; the lighting sets the tone for the drama of the noir film, though it seems no one on set had any grasp of film processing (unaw...are that lighting is more than a one-step process), so half the movie looks like it was shot on a home camcorder directly to VHS and the other appears to actually be film. I doubt it wasn't accidental; even if it weren't, it's uninspired as a visual motif. So many have praised the film's excellent cinematography. Sometimes there are pretty shots, mostly in transitions, but whenever an important scene arrives Lynch sets up a wide shot and presumably walks away, perhaps enjoying a grilled cheese sandwich while the camera sits lifeless. The "new standard for the movie villain," Frank Booth, was portrayed flatly; blind anger and weirdness perpetrated his character, he existed to be a hollow shell of everything that is wrong (an interesting philosophical argument but boring, considering every second of "characterization&qu
ot; was completely wasted on Frank). Jeffrey's temptation into evil and his parallels with Frank were amazingly blunt; he tripped over very thick lines throughout the entire movie. Kyle McLachlan's one facial expression failed to impress me; it was almost as if he decided to mix the bewilderment, danger, and romance he was supposed to be feeling into one bland mask. There was not a single character in the movie who displayed any sort of depth. All were inhuman representations of disembodied concepts; I saw a morality play trying to pass itself off as a detective noir. Lynch substituted genuine human psychoses for poorly understood personality quirks, then stapled them to his ghostly non-characters. I couldn't stand it.

    Blue Velvet

Pros: Dynamite direction, acting and plot.

Cons: This film is not for people with weak stomachs.

Blue Velvet is one of David Lynch's masterpieces. The storyline has plenty of suspense and mystery. Dennis Hopper is one of the most scary bad guys of all time as Frank Booth and the rest of the cast are excellent, especially Isabella Rossellini,... whose character complements Frank Booth. It is reminiscent of the film noir of the forties. this is a movie that all suspense freaks will enjoy, not only David Lynch fans. Mark Read more Less

    The Perfect Lynch Movie

By Yahoo! Shopping User  May 7, 2003

Not being a big Lynch fan, I loved this movie. Excellent lighting, cinematography; layers upon layers of Lynchs personal statements; the stupidity of small town life; the cast was perfect; Hoppers (antagonist) chemistry w/Jeffrey Beaumont (the protag...onist) was brilliant. so many funny moments.1. the sex scene with hopper (mommy-mommy)2. jeffrey hopper slapping dorothy valens in the sex scene3. how peoples beer of choice dictated their culture and persona...lol the psycho of course drank Pabst :D4. and one subtle scene that floored me when the character Paul who was f**king with Jeffrey introduced himself...5. candy colored clown....6. the zoom in panning to the underground to the beetles...I could go on for hours.brilliant movie. My favorite film by David Lynch

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jul 8, 2002

To me, this is the best movie David Lynch as made. It's apparet that the viewer that only gave it one star only saw the surface of the moive. Only a good movie can make you sick for weeks. Bad movies are just funny. Nothing is mailed, and it's not hi...s fist.. Anyhow, this is a story of good and evil. And how they share the same ground in a man's soul.More PBR! :)Legion Read more Less

    Intense and unforgettable

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jul 8, 2002

I was surprised to see this title listed with only 4 stars, but then I discovered that one offended reviewer had knocked the rating down. Now I hope to push it back up to five where it belongs. This movie is probably the best example of Lynch's odd o...ptimism and sense of beauty set against a horrifying and twisted underworld. As a bonus, this is actually a Lynch film with a consistent logical narrative. You can't ask for more. Read more Less

    You are all disturbed people

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jun 21, 2002

This was a waste of film and the movie made me sick for several days after watching it. The guy takes his fist, balls it up in her robe, then shoves it up inside her while some nut in the closet watches the whole thing and does nothing. Then, they ...rape this woman constantly while holding her husband hostage and sending body parts in the mail occassionally. And you call that great? You're all very disturbed people, that's all I have to say. Don't waste your time unless you have no conscience and an iron gut. Read more Less

This film is David Lynch at his best.

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Oct 25, 1999

A perfect enigmatic film. There are no wasted shots in this one. This film touches themes such as good vs. evil, mans fear of relationships and denied hidden truths. Get past the ear and you will realize that this film is the perfect marriage betwee...n an inviting story which makes you look in places that you try to admit are not there and surrealism.
