    Blink 182

    Pros: sounds more mature

Cons: less poppy (i like that sometimes)

probably my favorite of all the Blink albums, just because I'm not a true Blink fan. I usually like one or two songs on their other cds, and that's it. On this one, there's plenty of songs I like. The whole cd is able to be played thro...ugh without me changing songs. It's not the album of the year or anything, but definitely worth picking up, Blink fan or not, punk fan or not; this album is a lot more mellow than the rest of their stuff. The lyrics sound more mature, too. Read more Less

    Awesome CD

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Nov 17, 2003 | 8 out of 10 found this Blink-182 review helpful

Pros: Better lyrics, better use of both voices, lots of cool experimentation in sound

Cons: Too much Tom and not enough Mark, too many love songs

I love this CD. I've loved all Blnk CD's actually but I really love this one. I wasn't actually expecting much when I heard they had matured because normally when a great band "matures" I ussually end up wishing they hadn't.... But not in this case. This CD is everything I hoped for and more. In fact the music industry needed this CD with all the crap that gets played on the radio today like Simple Plan and Good Charlotte. The best part about this CD is that it sounds different from the other Blink CDs, that were criticized for being too much of the same. It's more interesting because they use cool new techniques in their music. It's also cool that there are many songs where both Mark and Tom sing instead of just Mark songs and Tom songs. Although there is an unbalanced amount of mostly Tom songs. Travis, the drummer, is awesome just like he was on the Box Car Racer CD. I normally dont really notice the drumming on CDs but I noticed Travis on this one for sure. Another big difference from old CDs is that the lyrics of the songs on this CD are actually good- unlike The Rock Show and All The Small Things- 2 good songs with horrible lyrics. There are still too many songs about love and relationships but overall the lyrics are good. I will be amazed if the critics don't love this CD. Sure it's Blink but for once a Blink CD is really an amazing CD not just a CD thats fun to listen to. It's like the band has been saying- this CD is a work of art. Read more Less

Pro Reviews: Blink-182

  • All Music Guide

There comes a time in every punk's life where he or she has to grow up, or at least acknowledge that maturity is just around the corner. blink182 put it off for as long as they could, but ten years into their career and two albums after their big breakthrough, 1999's Enema of the State, they decided to make a stab at being grownups for their eponymous sixth studio album. As with many selftitled albums, the trio uses this as an attempt to redefine itself, and they have considerably expanded both their sonic template and lyrical outlook on blink182. They're still rooted in punkpop, but even songs that stretch no further than that sound are a little darker, a little restless, reflecting the overall mood of the record. In shorthand, this is the record where blink182 delve into postpunk, opting for some appealingly sullen moodiness, offkilter hooks, lots of sonic textures, and even a duet with the Cure's Robert Smith. Since the trio is an inherently catchy group, this is a far cry from neop...ostpunk groups like Interpol or even the dynamically hooky Hot Hot Heat, but there is a greater variety of sounds on blink182 than on any of the trio's other albums, and the songwriting is similarly adventurous, alternating punchy, impassioned punkpop with weirder, atmospheric pieces like "Down" and "I'm Lost Without You." If nothing on the album has the immediate impact of "All the Small Things" though the opener, "Feeling This," comes close and if, on the whole, blink182 isn't as bracing or visceral as Dude Ranch or Enema, so be it: there's more to explore on this album than any of their other records. It's an unexpected and welcome maturation from a band that just an album ago seemed permanently stuck in juvenalia. - Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide Read more Less
