Perhaps unwittingly, The Blasting Concept Volume 2 marks pretty much the exact point at which SST Records irretrievably lost it. There are a couple of minor tracks by the Minutemen (whose guiding light, D. Boon, had recently been killed in a car accident) and Husker Du (who had just split for Warner Brothers and their eventual acrimonious breakup), not to mention a weak effort by label head Greg Ginn?s Black Flag, who were well into their tiresome Black Sabbath-and-weed phase. The problem is that the new bands Ginn had signed to SST had little of the invention of the bands who were deserting the label; artists like Wurm, Painted Willie and Ginn?s own instrumental side project Gone were substandard jam bands making music that was every bit as meandering and dull as that of the dinosaur jam bands punk rock was supposed to have killed off. Even the Meat Puppets turn in a tired run-through of the Willie Dixon blues standard ?I Just Want To Make Love To You? instead of one of the lysergic e...xcursions the trio were specializing in at the time.
