Pros: great original movie
Cons: not as good as original
I LOVED the original theatrical version. It is one of my favorite movies of all time, but I'd stay away from this one.
Without giving away a spoiler this version adds certain "effects" to the actors eyes that pretty much hands the story to you on a silver platter. No mystery. No wondering. Just "here it is"... as if you are too stupid to figure things out for yourself.
Pros: It's on DVD
Cons: It's only available in directors cut version!!!
Have been looking for the DVD version with Harrison Ford doing the voice over throughout the film forever! Makes it much easier to follow. I have it on VHS & it's 100% better than the directors cut. If anyone knows where to get the NR version with the voice narration, PLEASE let me know. Why must directors ruin a movies when they were perfect as they were?
I've seen things, people wouldn't believe.
I have to say that I felt alone for a long time on this issue, until I saw the other comments. This is one of my all time favorite movies, but the directors cut just feels empty without the voice over. Ridley Scott is a great director, but in this case the studio knew better. If the original was released on DVD, I would run to the store to buy it.
I cannot in all honesty say that I consider the Director's Cut to be the "good" version, but rather the original home video release with the much-loved voice-over is the good one. The voice-over explains a lot, and adds a lot more humanity to the Rick Deckard character in the film. I can only hope that Warner Home Video will receive enough demands from fans so that they will consider it to be cost effective to release the good version on DVD in the near future.
I can't believe they're releasing yet another version without the voiceover. To me, the Director's Cut is just a waste - might as well be a coaster.
I won`t spend $50.00 either..if I can`t have the original version....Why not let the viewer choose?????
I think the film seems boring without the narration....it helps considerable with the pace of the film...
Harrison Ford was great as a futuristic detective and Ruger Hauer was awesome as the human/robotic trying to live longer by trying to find the creator. The movie was great and it depends on which version you like. I wish they had both on the same DVD would be great. Anyway if you love Ruger Hauer in this movie you would love hime in another futuristic movie called "Blood of the Heros" with Joan Chen. I recommend you to see it. I wish they make a DVD version, cause it's better than most of his other movies on DVD.
Additions are great, but omissions are annoying. I read these reviews and because the original film has been altered I will not buy this DVD. Would it have killed someone just to include another DVD with the original LaserDisc version on it? It's already digital. Thumbs down to whoever produced this version.
I seen the original version of this movie and the first laserdisk version (2 big lp size laser disks) of this movie. and they both rock hard. this "directors cut" is a politically correct ET LIKE remake that cheapens the acting capability of all who is in this movie. dont buy this dvd, it leaves me cold and wondering why they messed with a classic movie. heck, they might as well of made it black and white and made thier lips move funny!!!!!!!!!!IMHO thumbs down!!!!!
Very good, but maybe if enough people bitch about it, the studio will release the original on DVD. The voice over gave the film a great "sam spade" kind of feeling, while presenting it's own unique story and atmosphere.
Release the ORIGINAL !!!! ... omitting Deckard's (Harrison Ford) voiceover narration destroyed the mood of the film. It bastardized the essence of the experience.
Also the "uplifting" finale seemed out of character for the self adsorbed soul tormented hero who sought meaning where there was non.
It spoiled my fond memories of the FILM.
the removal of the dialogue from the direcs version was silly, it leaves you unaware at points of what's going on. if you can check out and find an unrated version, you are ultra lucky, that's is where it is at.great imagery and story, ahead of it's time.
I have seen BR 20 times and still is one of my best movies. Is the BR as a replica as Rachael is? Who are the good guys or the bad guys? How much time we have left in this planet? All those moments.... I don't like the Director's cut; The BR narration is the center piece of the movie.
BR is one of my top 10 movies. Have both VHS versions.
Will not buy DVD Blade Runner until I hear Harrison Ford's melodious voice explaining his thoughts.
ALL the actors were superb and the scenery truly "off-world".
If you liked the matrix or Dark city this movie is for you. Granted it is not as fast paced, however the cinimatography was beyond its time. Dropping of the voice over and the more suspensful ending sold me on bieng a dedicated fan of this film noir. The first time you see this you may not like it but give it two or three more tries and you will find that you see new subtle things everytime the last time I saw it I picked out Edward James Olmos telling Deckert "youve done a mans job" Intresting line when you delve into the hidden story behind the story. rent it buy see it. Not for the small in brain.
I agree completely. Re-release the original. Blade Runner was a classic for me early on, and I remember vividly the excitement I had when I heard about the director's cut. What a disappointment. Whether they meant to or not the voice over gave the whole film an old black and white detective film feel, set in an incredible future environ. The director's cut lost all the feel and gained nothing in my opinion.
Apart from being cleaner in picture and sound, the Director's Cut doesn't even come close to the original as a classic SciFi flic.
I have seen every version of Blade Runner starting with an old Sony beta version. When it became available on Laser Disk I got that. When the "Directors cut" came out on laser I had to have that one to. Now I have the DVD version. We will never be able to agree on which version is "BEST." But it is important to understand that Blade Runner, the movie, and Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep ,the book, are very different. Mr. Scott has said in interviews that his Rick Deckard "is" a replicant. Mr. Dick's book disagrees. At any rate I strongly recommend to anyone that enjoys science fiction, that they get either version of Blade Runner. It is a stunning movie. Harrison Ford, Sean Young, Rutger Hauer, Daryl Hannah, Joanna Cassidy and everyone in the cast, give great performances. If only the DVD had Dolby 5.1 sound, "WOW."
I have seen both versions I feel the directors cut is very lacking without the voice over. Please release the original!!!!!
While the story and subject matter are way beyond its time, hearing the voice over is a must. The original version is beyond compare. Please re-release the orginal version on DVD.
After seeing the original version, then seeing the Director's cut, I realized I enjoyed hearing the characters voice during the movie, and missed the 'Happy Ending', which was removed by the director. If the original version was available, I'd purchace it, but I disliked the Director's cut enough, not to.
Thanks,

The directors cut is not the best version and will never live up to the original release with its beautiful story intact.
The movie is slow and uninspiring without the deliberate, wistfull voice of Harrison Ford as narrator.
Let's face it, it you have half a brain, you can figure out that the unicorn dream implies that Deckart is a replicant. But is he? It doesn't matter. The whole point of the movie is that humanity is not a quantifiable thing. The lack of lame narration makes the movie not only more mysterious, but also makes the audience figure out for themselves what's going on. This is one of the only times when the Director's Cut is far superior to the original...Stunning.
I took my wife to see this version in the theatre not knowing...she didn't see the original. I was SOOO disappointed...what was he (Ridley Scott) thinking with this cut? You need to have Deckert (Harrison Ford) narrate as in the original. And what was the unicorn all about?
