Pros: Mos def is great on the mic and production is different from the norm
Cons: you may not like his style
Mos def is one who is obviously proud of his heritage, and there is nothing wrong with that. you will encounter a good amount of it in his lyrics. Mos def creates songs that are perfect in their own imperfection. This album is one to be patient with and truly appreciate. If you liked q-tip from a tribe called quest, you will probably like mos def. this, in my opinion, is his best album so far.
Pros: Mos Def is at the tip of the rap game
Cons: Not enough tracks
This album is ostensibly one of the best that I own. Mos Def is socially conscious, quick witted, and lyrically superior to most emcees. Black on Both Sides is indicative of the rappers Native Tongue roots. If you are a fan of intelligent rap music BUY THIS ALBUM. It is worth whatever you pay. Pay particular attention to Umi Says, New World Water, and Ms. Fat Booty.
Love HipHop in this guys mouth. Skills untouch and level is awesome.
A Note to the people who gave this album anything less than 5 stars: Would you rather have Nellyville?
Every single track has something for everyone. From the food 4 thought on "Love" and "New World Water" to the bangers "Ms.Fat Booty" "Know That" or "Do It Now" Mos is consistant on this album. He is reflective ("Hip Hop" and "Rock N Roll") He is funny ("Got" "Fear Not of Man" and "Mr.Nigga") He's a teacher ("Mathematics" and "Umi Says") and so on.
Most important, he never overdoes it. I'd rather listen to an artist not do ENOUGH than do TOO MUCH. But Mos doesn't do eigther. He's on point. Check his crazy flow on "Brooklyn" and the great concept of "Habitat". He has a great voice and he's interesting 'cause you never know what he'll say next. Dope stuff Mos Def!
Com on now, I mean, I've be waitin since late 99' for your new solo lp. I mean, I don't mind the movie appearances, the broadway actin and the featurings in other albums, but it's been almost 3 years now. I know you got something to say!!!! Five stars for the album that is classic like 'thriller' as far as I'm concerned!
One of the tightest mutha
Mos Def is wicked, but jay-z ain't no little bling bling rapper. Dat's all i got to say
If somebody deserves the 5 stars, then Mos Def definitely does. This is a sparkling experimental rap album, musically reaches far beyond the everyday rap standards.
Mos Def's music might sound strange for most people, but this record is definitely worth giving a shot.
My favorite track is Ms. Fat Booty. This is how to make a great hip-hop track, I'm pretty sure it'll be considered as a classic one pretty soon!
Mos Def is the best MC ever,
don't follow the mainsteam rap. *cough*dmx,jay-z,dmx,ja-r
ule,*cough*
I'm gettin' sick of all these Mc's acting like their more unique than everyone. The only cut on here is "Ms.Fat Booty". "Mathematics" is the worst premo beat ever. People such as Mos Def and Lauryn Hill are very arrogant and over-rated. All they want to do now is sing. Blackstar and the FuGees were decent but not this solo garbage.
Its a good cd, but comparing it to his tracks on BLACKSTAR this cant compare. If i was Mos Def I would make another Blackstar CD with Talib Kweli and DJ Hi TEck and then that cd would be off the hezzie
This album is great for a few reasons. First and foremost it's nice to see a rap album primarily done by one person, with few guests, little sampling, and no friggin 30 second skits to take up space and trick people into thinking it's a good buy because it has a lot of tracks. Also the lyric content is refreshingly broad, not restricted to talking about bling, Cris, and cars, which frankly, is tired. My only knock on it is some of the beats are a bit uninspired. But I'll take lyric content over good beats any day. I eagerly await Jack Johnson
MOS tears it up! This cd is off the hook! ROCK N' ROLL is the DOPEST TRACK on this CD!!!! If u anit got this, yo u bes go to the store an' buy this!
'black on both sides' was a extreme disapointment for me, about a quarter of the album isnt even hip-hop its singing, nothing against that but when i go to buy a hiphop cd i dont want to hear that, it seems as though the album has an identity problem, going from great hip-hop tracks like 'know that' 'got' and 'mathematics' to weak tracks like 'speed law' and 'new world water' where the lyrics seem to be a waste of listening time, then there is the singing portion with misplaced tracks such as 'umi says' and 'climb' which really dont belong on a hip-hop cd. Compared to some great tracks he appeared on, this cd is trash.
Have you got a big collection of rap records?
Have you noticed that 9/10 of your albums have got a few good songs and the rest is filler? Well if you are tired - like me - of having to program a playlist to avoid the bad songs then you need Mos Def's Black On Both Sides. Every single track on this album was lovingly crafted by Mos to be playable and replayably over and over again. The songs are deep an' the more you listen to them the more you learn about the mentality of the ghetto poet who wrote them.
The first track Fear Not Of Man is a smooth introspective showing Mos' views on a few subjects (mainly hiphop) and featuring the memorable lines "Fear not of men because men must die. Mind over matter and soul before flesh."
The album winds its way along to Miss Fat Booty, a song you've probably already heard since it was a hit single a while ago. It's an ironic look at a ghetto love story and the narrative is on par with the almighty Slick Rick while the bass and the tune will get your booty shakin' too.
The songs are all deep and varied enough to deserve a whole review for each one but since im short on time i'll only mention one more. Know That featuring Black Star's other half, Talib Kweli. It's a fast paced rousing track in which Kweli assaults the commercial emcees who write with no soul and their wallets in mind. It's because of this amazing track that i am looking for the Black Star album so i can hear more of Mos and Talib rhyming together.
In conclusion i would just like to say that this album is a brilliant departure to all the conformist gangsta rap out there and really deserves a listen. The mighty Mos Def does it all and manages to do it all without having to insult half the population ( a lesson Eminem should learn). One last thing, i bought this album 7 months ago and the only time it left my CD player was when it needed cleaning :) enjoy
The BlackStar Album had way better production. Mos Def and Kwali try to get deep when ryhming instead of superficial which is unique. They are positve. There aren't many postive rapper's left and that makes them even better. They should have used the same production team for the Mos Def album as they did for the Blackstar album.
buy it, copy it, download it or just listen to it at your friends house. whatever you do, don't miss out on this album. it mesmerizes, it flows, it chops, rocks, rolls, reels, spins, spits and it never, ever, sputters. who is this guy? well, he's everywhere now. MTV, Spike Lee and Mike Jordan have all put him on the air. Only fitting for a man who seems to have no airs about him. It's also a breath of fresh air to not have to be beat over the head with 9mm and booty lyrics.
regardless of what others think i felt it was hot...although it seems to lag at times his skill is tight! favorites include fear not of man, ms. fat booty, do it now and may-december.
its a great album, but when you compare it to Talib Kweli, Common, and De La Soul its not even close.
this is a really good album. i was skeptical at first but it turned out to be a tight album.
Put me own so we can drop wisdom on da mic~!

Yeah, I know I'm a bit late on this, but I have to post on this LP. Put simply: what hip hop should be. An eclectic album that includes the freshest song that I've heard in a long while - "Umi Says". Lyrically sound with phat beats and intelligence - The Definition of Smooth.
In a time where hip-hop and rap are going down to
cheap, superficial topics, Mos Def releases a superb
album that is so honest and true. His messages come
through clear, and I feel his beats too. One of the best
MCs out there...
Cop this CD
Mos Def brings true hip-hop out. His lyrics with a message are a refreshing change from most of the popular rap music coming out these days. The production is perfectly suited for Mos Def's sing songy style. I have never heard a better complete album.
The complete opposite of the usual Cash Money Pop bull
Mos Def is definately an excellent emcee but voted album of the year is debateable. Sure his flows go nice but it isn`t easy listening as some track do seem familiar. But Ms Fat booty and mathematics are surefire hits.
Fantastic album, with class songs like mathematics produced by premier. A smooth flow and voice, mos def is going to send rawkus records to the top
This is by far the best CD I've ever owned. The lyrics are so meaningful, deep and altogether SO tight. Mos Def taps into a centuries old tradition of black expression which is both historically relevant but also deeply imaginative as well. The samples are really influenced by jazz, which makes really original and catchy samples. This is by far the best album of 2000 (even though it's only April!).
