  • All Music Guide

Black Pearls: The Poetry of Maya Angelou is a reissue of the 1969 album The Poetry of Maya Angelou, which finds the poet reading 33 poems, most of which are featured in her book Just Give Me a Cool Drink of Water 'Fore I Die. There are five musical interludes by Ed Bland scattered throughout the record, but the primary appeal of the record, of course, is Angelou's poetry, and this record contains some impassioned readings of several of her finest poems. The reissue includes the original liner notes by James Baldwin, plus new notes from Robin Marcus Vazquez and Elizabeth Pavone.
