Black9 is a third-person shooter set in the year 2080. Earth is overrun with crime, chaos, and despair, with cartels staking claim on mankind's future. The Illuminati, the most powerful of the cartels, have decided to assert their dominance by eliminating the competition. Now all nine members of the Illuminati are plotting against each other, all secretly hoping they will emerge victorious to rule over what's left of the planet. Into this turmoil walks the protagonist, a mercenary for hire who offers no pretense of loyalty or honor.

Played entirely from a perspective behind the lead character, Black9 involves guiding the mercenary through an assortment of futuristic urban locales in his attempt to make a name for himself. Players are equipped with a number of high-tech weapons, gadgets, and cybernetic enhancements, with more items available as the game progresses. Role-playing elements in the areas of character and skill development are also included.
