This film stars the pretty Lillian Gish, Mae Marsh, Miriam Cooper, Wallace Reid and Eugene Pallette. Basically it tells the story of reconstruction and the Civil War. Many people find this film hard to follow, but if you try to watch it from a historical perspective, it's much easier. This film is sort of an acquired taste. If you don't like silent epics or don't follow U.S. history, this will not be your cup of tea. But for most, this film will be a memorable and gripping viewing experience. Subsequent viewings make this film better and better. With excellent performances from all of its actors and D.W. Griffith's direction, this is a must see film.

for modern movie audiences this picture is extremely hard to follow. While I can appreciate the tremendous steps Griffith took to make this picture, it leaves a great deal to be desired. The rather stark look at our country's herritage is a worthwhile topic, but, I had trouble distinguishing characters. Also, the score of the movies is basically this dixieland music over and over again. I suggest watching it the way it was made. Silent. I first saw this when the the 100 list first came out. I dont want to see it again.
