Pro Reviews: Billy

  • All Music Guide

This was Fury's biggest-selling album of the '60s, reaching the British Top Ten. But it wasn't very good, typifying the kind of teen idol fare that rode high on the British charts before Merseybeat. He could rock half decently when given the chance, but most of the numbers are pop ballads, replete with light orchestration and crooning female backup vocals. Fury will always have his champions in England; just read the wildly enthusiastic historical liner notes to this reissue for starters. But to Yankee ears, this record sounds suspiciously like the kind of British pop fluff that the Beatles and their minions were specifically reacting against to eradicate. The CD reissue on BGO combines this and the 1963 live album We Want Billy on one CD.
