  • Overall:

    One awesome album

Now, I may disagree with the previous reviewer's idea of spitting of fat kids, but I do agree with the concept of buying it. Witty and real lyrics, combined with powerful vocals, great drums and guitar make X one of the greatest bands of the 70s, 80...s, and early 90s. After purchasing the CD, it has become a mainstay in my stereo, and would reccomend you go out and buy one! Convince your friends to buy one! You seriously won't be sorry. Read more Less

    X. Oldschool punk band from the 70's. Just when the time was ripe. I've only heard this cd. They have about 4 or 5 more and I'm saving my pennies for them. I would rate them as high as it would go but I haven't had comparison. Great cd. Sad love stor...y: John+Exene. You'll sing-a-long, you'll tap your feet, you'll want to spit on fat kids. BUy it. Pro Reviews: Beyond & Back: The X Anthology

  • All Music Guide

X cannot be praised enough. The legendary L.A. band wrote countless classics, released consistent albums, and have influenced many along the way (just check out the raves fellow rockers give the band in Beyond Back's liner notes). It's a testament to their greatness that the material on Beyond Back (The X Anthology) sounds original and fresh in the present day. The group touched on many styles, such as rockabilly, folk and punk, and successfully made each one their own. This two-CD release is a hefty two hours long, and is 50 hits and 50 rarities/unreleased material (demos, outtakes, live takes, etc.). Highlights include the riff-heavy "Hungry Wolf," the beautiful vocal harmonies of "I Must Not Think Bad Thoughts," and the Nirvana-pop of "White Girl." Some interesting oddities include a cover of the Doors' "Soul Kitchen," a remixed version of their "Blue Spark," and a live take of "Nausea" (a song Jane's Addiction covered). If you're unfamiliar with (or don't own) X's albums, do your...self a favor and get Under the Big Black Sun, More Fun in the New World, and/or Los Angeles/Wild Gift. Then work your way to Beyond And Back. You won't regret it. - Greg Prato, All Music Guide Read more Less

Biography

X

X were the quintessential L.A. punk rockers before they grew into a world-class rock roll band and live band; however, enthusiasm for their unique, intelligent and humorous work never quite reached critical mass. Formed in 1977 after songwriter and bassist John Doe (b. Feb. 24, 1956) met (and later married) Exene Cervenka (b. Feb. 1, 1956) at a Venice poetry workshop, ... Read more
