Pro Reviews: Better Than the Rest (1974)

  • All Music Guide

Recorded before they had a recording contract, this set of tunes wasn't released until the guys had made it big with their second Rounder album, but nonetheless, Better Than the Rest is more than mere demos. Full of RB and early rock, highlights include Chuck Berry's "Nadine," Howlin' Wolf's "Howlin' for My Baby," and John Lee Hooker's "Huckle Up Baby." While Better Than the Rest doesn't truly add all that much to the George Thorogood catalogue, it doesn't damage it either, a nice souvenir of when this band was just starting out. Raw, but right.
