Pro Reviews: Best of the Stan Freberg Shows
| EXPERT RATING: From AMG Reviews In 1957, with a small handful of 7" singles under his belt as well as an ongoing career in radio, Stan Freberg landed his own radio show on CBS, which ran unsponsored for 15 weeks. Freberg was joined on the show by Daws Butler (better known as the voice of Yogi Bear), June Foray (who played a pretty famous squirrel on Rocky and Bullwinkle), and Peter Leeds (a popular character actor of the time). The material on this two-record collection was compiled from those shows, and is set up here as if it were two complete shows, one per record. As a parody of other television and radio shows, this works exceptionally well, but it also works fairly well as social criticism, too -- Freberg had a bit of a reputation for being a bit of a provocateur, and though it seems fairly tame by today's standards, there's definitely an edge to this that a lot of other material from the time just doesn't sport. Of historical note is the part on side three where Freberg decides to sponsor the show himself and have commercials written about himself, presaging his real-world entry into the world of advertising copywriting. - Sean Carruthers, All Music Guide |
