Pro Reviews: Best of Theatre of Hate [Recall]

  • All Music Guide

Twenty songs serve up a truly careerspanning collection, tracing Theatre Of Hate from the impassioned rudiments of their "Legion"/"Original Sin" debut single, through to a handful of cuts from 1996's Retribution, and hitting all the expected highspots en route. There are so many Theatre Of Hate compilations around, of course, that this budget set is easily overlooked especially by listeners who really want to concentrate on the band's early 1980s heyday. But still there is little room for complaint here, and the overall experience is one of absolute exhilaration, coupled with total bafflement why was this band not the biggest thing ever?
