  • All Music Guide

Although they may not have reached the same stature or popularity within the gospel music industry as modern day quartets the Jackson Southernaires or the Canton Spirituals, the late Robert Blair along with his group, the Fantastic Violinaires, yet carried a strong and loyal fan base. Blair, who died in 2001, is best remembered for his gruff, preacher-like vocal delivery, a close match sound- and quality-wise to Mighty Clouds of Joy lead vocal king Joe Ligon. That essence, along with the piercing falsetto background vocals of the Violinaires, helps to make this package a memorable one.

Biography

Robert Blair

Blair began his contemporary quartet group in the '60s and became known for his Julius Cheeks-like falsetto shouting and raving. The group has recorded up to the present. While their recent AIR Records albums have been good, their best music was recorded in the '60s on the Chess and Checker labels. - Bil Carpenter, All Music Guide Read more
