Pro Reviews: Best of Japan [Paradiso]

  • All Music Guide

Paradiso's idea of the best of Japan is a very unrepresentative one, and it comes in a cheaply puttogether package, with horrifically offputting graphics. The disc takes all of the group's albums into consideration, albeit strange consideration. Obvious picks like “Adolescent Sex," “Quiet Life," and “Life in Tokyo" are included, but they're offset with a number of baffling selections that push out far more deserving moments from the discography. Skimpy, messy, and just plain wrongheaded, this is one of the worst Japan compilations to have ever been released. If a singledisc summary is more preferable than one of the proper albums as an introduction, then hunt down The Singles.
