Pro Reviews: Ben Kweller
| EXPERT RATING: From AMG Reviews On his third, selftitled effort, Ben Kweller takes the notion of "solo album" to the extreme, playing all of the instruments himself. For many artists, this would result in an album that's quiet and insular. However, Ben Kweller is nearly as immediate and direct as Sha Sha and On My Way were, but with a little more focus. Kweller's eternally boyish voice is perfectly suited to his tales of young love, hanging out and heartache, whether he frames them in giddy, impatient pop like "Run," earnest tonepoems like "Thirteen," or a sound somewhere between the two, as on the single "Summer Dress." To his credit, though, Kweller sounds a little more mature on several songs, particularly "Penny on the Train Track" and "Red Eye," which asks the surprisingly direct question, "How long will it take before I have your heart to break?" Equally divided between thoughtful ballads such as "Until I Die" and half goodnatured, chugging power pop like "Gotta Move" and "Magic" with the occasional feisty rocker like "This Is War" thrown in for good measure Ben Kweller treads the same path as Kweller's other work, but fortunately, it still sounds genuine, not formulaic. - Heather Phares, All Music Guide |

Pros: background music
Cons: lack of a real breakthrough
The usual formula of an indie band/artist that's averagely wellknown is: self-produced + self-released + self-promoted + self-distributed - self-titled album. Yeah, a self-titled album is a sector of the DIY progress in most cases. Now it's true for this man too. So, as always, this self titled album might be the most likely to be mentioned to talk about Kweller, though to date it's quite new to be popular. (It was out on Sep 19, my Jarv's birthday!) This is much better than the previous one, 'On My Way', and must be what 'Sha Sha' fans expected. Kweller played all instruments for the recording. There's no huge change, still very Ben Kweller, except a bit more poppy so it can more easily be appreciated. However, the man seems better at choosing singles to be released. "Sundress", a sweet love song for his lucky girl, is potentially a big hit, with the romantic video of him and his wife Lizzy. The song appears in the album even twice, as a studio version and an acoustic one. Other songs are beautiful musically as well, including the nice ending ballad "Sorry Signs on Cash Machines". 4 stars out of 5. ...
