Pro Reviews: Below Beyond Above

  • All Music Guide

A surprisingly subdued outing from the Swiss duo known for their improvisations on everyday electronics, on this CD release the intensity comes down a step from the chaotic noise of other releases. Here the duo of Norbert Moslang and Andy Guhl stripped back its sound to a much quieter collage of modulating textures, in the vein of the super-reduced electronic improv, and the duo's work is all the better for it. On this CD the attentive listener can hear every nuance of the fractured machinery that the two improvise on, and the album has the feel of the early electronics of David Tudor, he and John Cage's "Cartridge Music" in particular. Even the looping micro-texture of Oval or Microstoria are present, though without all the digital sterility of either. Coming from a background in free improvisation and noise, the duo's approach is different again still, in that there is a candid spontaneity to the pieces.
