User Reviews: Beloved (1998)

  • Overall:

    A great movie

    By Debra  Jan 28, 2006

    Pros: Beautiful acting and cinematography

Cons: a bit long for average movie goer

I thoroughly loved this movie. It was helpful to have read Morrison's novel prior to seeing the movie; Nevertheless, the movie stands on its own as a moving glimpse into the life of a bondswoman. At its core, Beloved is a love story. The story of... a woman, a mother, who risks everything to ensure that her children are safe and loved. In an attempt to protect her children, she chooses to kill them--she succeeds at killing one. The movie, like the novel, presents a universal truth which all mothers come to know--our children are of us, they pass through us, but they do not belong to us. Sethe ultimately learns that the greatest love she has is the love that she has for herself. Beloved depicts this theme beautifully and is wonderfully acted. It is a shame that not more people enjoyed the movie. I applaud Ms. Winfrey for having the courage to produce such a wonderful film. Read more Less

    Pros: Based on Good Novel

Cons: Never close to a good movie

Quite simply one of the worst movies I ever saw. Painfully bad acting. Until Danny Glover becomes the focus, the acting is just awfull. Simple obvious plot. (I'm sure many have complained that that they couldn't follow it because it's h...ard to believe you're watching something this stupid!) When Oprah exclaims "You are my Beloved" I want to shout out "What took you so long to figure THAT out???" 2/3's of the way through the movie the projector stopped., It took a few minuted to get the film going again. At the end of the movie an usher was handing out tickets for a free movie ... and I asked "You give free tickets for anyone who CAN sit through that movie??" Avoid it like the plague. Read more Less
