Poor Setup when using WEP encryption. Tiny setup s

By BillP  Dec 11, 2004 | 2 out of 3 found this Belkin Wireless G USB Network Adapter review helpful

Pros: Neat holder to get the wireless above the desk top

Cons: Terrible setup when compared to Netgear

I bought the Wireless G USB adapter because it can be extended above the desk top to get the wireless signals away from the PC cabinet. Also, the G mod is faster but other than this, I see not other advantages.Con: The software setup is terrible if... you try to use WEP Security. First the type in the instruction book is useless and there is not a good explanation of the security types.Next the Wireless Monitor screen is so tiny that I find it hard to read, very poor. Besides it is very confusing. I still cannot get it to work with 128 bit WEP encryption. In comparison, the Netgear WC111 USB stick was setup in a minute. All of the required setup information is on one big screen. WEP encryption was a snap, very effortless.Overall, pass on this product. Read more Less

not recommended for use with desktop pc

    By Martina K  Oct 4, 2007

Pros: you don't have to open your pc to install wireless

Cons: looses connection to access point every 15 minutes

I bought this item 3 days ago because I thought it was great that you didn't have to open up your pc to install a wireless card. My OS is Windows XP SP2. Installation and Setup of the item is fairly easy. You can disable the Windows XP wireless s...etup utility in the program utility that comes with the item. You can choose to connect the stick directly to a usb port on your pc or on a little stand with usb connection that comes with it. This gives you the chance to move it arround to find the optimal space for best connection. However, I tried both and the stick is about 40 inches away from the access point but it looses connection every 15 to 20 minutes. You have to go back into the the program utility and refresh the connection and it comes up again almost immediately but this is very inconvenient. Also ever since I use it, my pc has become somewhat instable. It stalls, freezes and won't let me shut down if I want to reboot it. I always end up having to do a "cold" start up. All over I wouldn't recommend this item for PC useres. I didn't try it on my laptop since I have a lynksys card in there that works just fine. Read more Less

    Not happy

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jun 20, 2007

    Pros: Low cost

    Cons: Erratic behaviour

Installation was easy and it worked well at first. However, within a couple of days behaviour became erratic and it frequenctly lost the connection. Switched to WiFi 'b' mode and it then stayed connected. After about 3 months of opera...tion like this I bought an HP printer. I installed the printer driver and now the Belkin device will not stay connected for more than a couple of minutes. Is this just conincidence? 'Repair' always fixes the problem for a couple of minutes. I also have a Dell notebook connected to the router via WiFi and have no problems. I have made many tests on different parameters (channel, signal strength, interference etc) and am now convinced that this is a problem of the USB device or driver. I will have to buy another adapter as this is no longer usable. Read more Less

Serious loser here, Don't buy it!

    By Paul  Jun 5, 2007

    Pros: Price is cheap

Cons: You get what you pay for! The thing doesn't work!

I bought a Belkin wireless USB G Version 4xxxx adapter, and the thing wouldn't stay connected. It would connect, then disconnect after a few seconds, then disconnect and so on. I downloaded the latest drivers for version 4xxx, but no go. I return...ed that one, and just got another. This time it's a version 3xxx. I thought this might be better, but still the same issue. I am 20 feet from the access point, and the signal strength is only at 54%. I suggest Belkin put more time into their product, instead of their fancy setup installer that talks to you. (Whoopie!) I wanted something that works, and thought Belkin was a fairly good bet. I was proven wrong, unfortunately for us both. Read more Less

    Belkin wireless G USB

    By Micheal  Apr 21, 2007

    Pros: Ermmm, none

    Cons: Read on

I use belkin for all my wireless networking both at home and at work and have never had any problem with belkin products, until I bought this USB adapter. The adapter randomly looses connection to the router/modem every five minutes or so, and rarel...y connects abouve 24.0 Mbps, despite being only 30 feet from the wireless router modem. I have contacted belkin in the past for technical support and they used to be amazing, but having contacted them recently about this USB device, it seems that there UK freephone number is now a local rate numbeer which connects you to a call centre in India. I spoke to a nice lady at the call centre, who couldn't understand me and vice versa. In the end she asked me to turn on the dial on demand option on my router modem. What that has to do with the USB adapter losing a connection to the router modem, I am still unsure, but there you go. A poor product, which having read many reviews is causing a lot of people problems. If belkin had any sense they would do a product recall. Read more Less

    By Nathaniel  Nov 11, 2006

    Pros: Works Great!!

Cons: Window Zero Configuration(WZC) needs to be enabled sometime

I found this product to work very well with my Dell XPS, Windows XP system. After installation, I was on the internet (wireless) in no time. I am presently using the old USB 1.1 with the Belkin Wireless G USB Network Adapter, I plan to install a USB ...2.0 card to get even faster speeds. Read more Less
