    Cafe goes mainstream.

    Pros: Love her originality

Cons: The beats are kind of one sided.

I really like this girl. She has her own unique sound. That is what the music scene needs more of, people being themselves, not a machine created by a record label. Not say that is bad, just hearing someone like Regina Spektor is a nice relief. I lov...e the song fidelity best song on the CD, I also like Samson, and hotel song..probally my top three. I would strongly recommend Regins Spektor to everyone, very great CD. Read more Less

    Begin to Love

Pros: Hotel Song, Better, Fidelity, Apres Moi, 20 Years of Snow

Cons: ...just listen and you won't be disappointed

Regina Spektor is someone who constantly amazes who deliberately reaches for the unpredictable. Unlike Fiona Apple (whom she is frequently compared to vocally), Tori Amos or any of the other undefinable women of her league Regina never sticks to a pa...rticular sound or style. Her signature can be found in the fact that she could care less for the usual ways that the women of her genre proceed to express themselves. Each song sounds like someone else and from start to finish you will happily drown in the waters she musically drags you through. She will make the piano dance for you, she will break your heart, she will bring you joy and humor and by the finish of the album you will want to hear it all over again. Begin to Hope is a roller coaster of emotions and feelings. With vocal stylings that go from hurt, soft and tender to a dark rage that edges the concepts of sanity. Songs I would recommend downloading for a test-drive include: Better, Fidelity, Samson, Fields Below, Apres Moi, 20 Years of Snow, Summer in the City. Read more Less

Pro Reviews: Begin To Hope

  • All Music Guide

On Begin to Hope, Regina Spektor treads a delicate balance between her antifolk past and her present home on Sire Records. Though the label rereleased Soviet Kitsch in 2004, Begin to Hope is Spektor's first original material for Sire, and it feels more like a majorlabel debut than Soviet Kitsch ever did. The album's big, glossy production and preponderance of drum machines and keyboards inches Spektor toward territory that isn't exactly mainstream, but is closer to a more conventional adult alternative singer/songwriter sound. Her songwriting mirrors this, too: "Field Below," which finds her wishing for the countryside while living in the city, has a mellow, appealingly rambling vibe that grows from the traditional singer/songwriter roots of Joni and Carole; "Better" takes the breathy, literate, pretty side of Spektor's music and tailors it into a radiofriendly single. "On the Radio" takes it a step further and becomes a smart, funny, and sad metasingle, with lyrics like "We listened t...o it twice/Because the DJ was asleep" backed by poppy synths and beats. Biography

Regina Spektor

A veteran of New York's antifolk scene, Regina Spektor makes quirky, highly eclectic, but always personal music. Born and raised in Moscow until age nine, Spektor listened to her father's bootleg tapes of Western pop and rock as a young child and also learned to play piano. She and her family moved from Russia to the Bronx, where she was immersed in American culture (at... Read more
