Before this the Stones made good singles. Here they made a great album. Sympathy for the Devil, Stray Cat Blues, Parachute Woman, etc. are all great tunes. It lacks the gayness of later efforts.

"Beggars Banquet" is pure proof that The Rolling Stones always responded well to a challenge. When first released in 1968, The Stones were beginning to crack under the twin stresses of Brian Jones paralyzing drug addiction and the failure of "Their Satanic Majesty's Request", a painful attempt to follow up The Beatles "Sgt. Pepper". Backs to the wall, the band ditched the florid psychedelia in favor of their first love - the blues.
The first landmark on their way back was the single "Jumping Jack Flash", a thunderous bit of electric blues which set the stage for the darker music to come. The artistic partnership of Keith Richards and Mick Jagger blossomed in full with "Beggars Banquet", and the album featured some their most accomplished songwriting to date. Pouring forth from the duo were such career mileStones as "Stray Cat Blues", "Parachute Woman", the anthemic "Street Fighting Man" and the album's stunning centerpiece, "Sympathy For The Devil". It was "Sympathy" that finally made it clear that The Stones were a creative force worthy of being spoken of in the same breath as the Almighty Fab Four. With its dynamic Third World beat, scorching guitar solos, and a brilliantly literate lyric, "Sympathy" was the bold masterstroke that fans had been waiting for, the counterpoint to the unabashed Utopian optimism of Summer of Love. But "Beggars" was more than that, and some of the quieter pieces were of equal stature - "No Expectations" and "Salt of the Earth" demonstrated Keith Richards new facination with American country music, an avenue explored on following Stones albums throughout the seventies.
But "Beggars Banquet" remains one of the band's finest hours - and set the stage for The Stones second dynasty (1968-1972) proving that they could do more than make great singles. They could make great albums.

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Aug 8, 2001

OK, Sympathy is the best Stones song ever. Listened to that song a million times and still love it. No Expectations is a terrific ballad, also some great blues here. Two songs I dont care for here. (P. Son and Salt of the Earth) Otherwise, #4 on my best Stones album list. Perfectly nasty.

Little do any of you know (given) the stones first rolled this past Decca's big wigs with the 'Infamouse Toilet Cover' it was Decca's decission , not the stones to issue it with the white R.S.V.P. cover...plus at the time of recording this album the Beatles last issue was 'Lady Madonna'... who were they copying? How do you people come up with your data?... i guess you shit it out with most of your thought processes...the more you post the more you let people know what inbred goat humpers you really strive to be...(and that's an insult to the inbred goat humpers out there...)get it right...asshole!

    Salt of the Stones

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jul 15, 2001

This is the best Stones album. From the opening "Sympathy for the Devil" to the final "Salt of the Earth, this record hit the musical mark in ways that "satanic" just missed. "Street fightin man" was the single, "stray cat blues" and "Jigsaw puzzle" are treasures. "factory girl", "dear doctor" ,and "no expectations" give us some of Mick's best blues vocals. Can't miss this stones classic.

Beggars Banquet is a good album no matter what. And how is a picture of a filth ridden bathroom anything like white space? Is anybody gonna get that petty and say their ripping off the White Album's cover? But the music is really good, it's the start of a string of good albums for the stones, and its more raw, real, and rock 'n' roll than the Beatles anyways.

By Yahoo! Shopping User  May 20, 2001

Let me tell you something shithead. The Stones did NOT, AND I REPEAT DID NOT, copy the terrible Beatles 1968 album cover here. If you notice (assuming you are not blind and/or stupid, which obviously you are) the Stones album has a picture of a fucking shit house toilet with yellow-white walls; the Beatles WHITE ALBUM is just A PLAIN WHITE COVER!!! It would take a huge act of imagination to compare the two, would it not??? And as for the music, well I didn't hear the blues and country music on the WHITE ALBUM that is evident throughout this. So why don't you do your fucking homework before you shoot your mouth about THE BEST ROCK'N'ROLL BAND EVER, THE STONES!

Re: country twang delivered by the stone

By Yahoo! Shopping User  May 4, 2001

The Stones popularity ran in parallel alongside the Beatles during the '60s. There probably was some unspoken rivalry between them, but there the comparison really ends. The Beatles were always a pop group, whereas the Stones' music has always been Blues based. If you don't care for Blues, Gospel or Soul music then you're unlikely to dig the what the Stones do, and probably will their music unappealing.

For those who enjoy Blues, Beggar's Banquet (BB) was probably theStones' Bluesiest album of all, and there is a feel of melancholia throughout. The feeling and quality of the songs on this album are superb (IMHO). It was also the last album that featured Brian Jones as an original full time member. He was found dead a year later.

There isn't one mediocre track on this album. They're all excellent in their own way. "Prodigal Son" is pure Blues. "Salt of the Earth" is Gospel flavoured. "Dear Doctor" suggests "Country Blues". However you wish to categorise the songs, one point remains clear.

In the late '60s, most pop pundits said Sgnt. Pepper was the greatest album of all time and would easily stand the test of time. Well it certainly sounds dated today. However thirty three years on, BB still has a freshness about it, and does not date (to my ears) in any way. If there is one Stones album worth owning, then this is it!

    Only two good songs

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Apr 2, 2001

The Rolling Stones had no original ideas in the sixties and were always one step behind the Beatles. They copied the album cover from the white album. The album is borring, only SYMPATHY FOR THE DEVIL and STREET FIGHTING MAN are the only good songs on the album, the rest sucks. Most of the songs do not sound that good, I guess the album cover is just as bad.

This album has four good songs, SYMPATHY FOR THE DEVIL, STREET FIGHTING MAN, SALT OF THE EARTH, and STRAY CAT BLUES. The rest sucks, they copied the album cover to the beatles' white album, which is 100% better. Just like all their sixties albums, they all suck. The rest of this album is boring.

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Mar 8, 2001

I love both the stones and the beatles and they are both great bands in their own rights. I think in the beginning there may have been a tendency to follow the beatles lead, but most bands did. Stones really found their way when they did their own thing as is very apparent on this great album.
