Before Everything...And After
, September 15, 2003Reviewer: Benjamin Hemingway - See all Benjamin Hemingway's reviews1 of 1 Yahoo! Users found this Before Everything & After (Enhanced) review helpful This CD just seems to be a step above everything else MxPx has put out. Excpect a bit of airplay from this one! The album has adopted a slightly different style than before. I like MxPx, but almost all the songs on their other albums sound repetitive. This is not true for Before Everything and After; songs range from pop to emo to punk to hardcore. Certainly a good mix, yet it all blends together VERY WELL. The overall sound is something like that of the Ataris "So Long Astoria". The first single from this album is gonna be "Everything Sucks When You're Gone" a love song...and I gotta admit the video is hilarious. Other songs to notice are Well Adjusted, The Capitol: , and Quit Your Life: a VERY GOOD SLOW DANCING SONG. Another thing to note is that this album has more of a Christian influence than any album they have put out since Teenage Politics. Benji from Good Charlotte, as well as the singers from the Ataris, New Found Glory, and The Halo Friendlies make guest apearances singing on this album; adding to the already extreme tallent of MxPx. This album is certainly the best yet! If you are already a fan of MxPx, or like Good Charlotte, The Ataris, or Brand New then this album is definitely for you. I give it a 5/5! ...

Pro Reviews: Before Everything & After (Enhanced)
| EXPERT RATING: From AMG Reviews Mike Herrera, Yuri Ruley, and Tom Wisniewski have been rocking the kids for Ten Years and Running, as their 2002 retrospective proudly put it. While their third outing for AM mostly traces the peaks and valleys of a bipolar relationship, tracks like "Play It Loud" and "Kings of Hollywood" assert the band's van-touring pride, and dedication to "left coast punk rawk [sic]". Reaching out to freshly-minted suburbanite punk Benji Madden for guest vocals only solidifies the band's status as 10-and-5 men. But Before Everything After isn't the clutch home run it could have been. Instead of leading by example, the veteran trio has embraced the big budget punk pop treatment that regularly tweaks albums by junior leaguers like New Found Glory or Madden's own Good Charlotte. Mixing from the ubiquitous Lord-Alge brothers squeegees clean each cut, plugging power chords into punchy drum fills, processing vocals to within an inch of their humanity, and putting pop accessibility way before any punk revivalist relevancy. You might recognize "Well Adjusted" from its role in a popular Pepsi commercial; in any case, its vintage Green Day crunch is powerful, yet utterly typical. The song's carefully cleansed grit will light up the LEDs on your car stereo, but if you can tell it apart from its brethren, you win a Hercules wristband. Following standard operating procedure, Before Everything's handful of rock anthems are accompanied by a sagging midsection of pop punk power ballads. Cloying synths, treated piano, surging string sections, and robot vocal processing all busy up "Don't Walk Away" and "Quit Your Life", where Herrera's emotional perspective on a bicoastal romance amounts to ordering in Chinese food. Who started this epidemic of Hot Topic hair gel balladry? It deadens any energy given off by albums' rocking moments (here, the otherwise awesome "More Everything" withers next to the cello and violin of its crying cousin). Power ballads have no place in punk rock - old or new, left coast or right. Sure, they're a great way to meet girls. Just ask Bon Jovi or Motley Crue, who were lighting lighters and banging heads when the Warped Tour Generation was still just a one night stand. But the hair bands polished their metal machines with pop, and the glimmer didn't last. Punk pop veterans like MXPX should have learned this lesson long ago. Instead, Before Everything After is a radio-friendly flame out that's soundalike safe for a quick and easy sell. - Johnny Loftus , All Music Guide |

Pros: Great, uplifting music. Very positive!
Cons: Lyrics in general aren't as deep as some of their older stuff, but they are awesome anyways
This is without a doubt the most mature effort from this great band. The whole album is very upbeat and lighthearted. Even the classic songs about heartbreak (take "Brokenhearted" for example) have a very positive vibe. Musically they're exploring a whole new territory. They still sound as tight as always, but the addition of keys and strings on a few songs make this album very rich in texture. The song that most clearly shows the band's growth in this sense is probably "Quit Your Life," and the background vocals create a very overwhelming atmosphere.

Although the sound is new throughout the whole album, there are tracks that resemble the more traditional MxPx style, like "Well Adjusted," which is a very catchy tune full of energy, "More Everything," and "You Make Me, Me." And of course, the first single off this album, "Everything Sucks (When You're Gone)," deserves much credit as well, for being a very well crafted song with a nice and catchy melody.
All in all, this is a very solid album, and I have no doubt that we'll continue to enjoy great music from this ever-evolving band. Congratulations to MxPx on another job well done. ...
