    The Bee Gee's First (1967)

By Yahoo! Shopping User  May 2, 2006

Pros: Beatlesque harmonies with a original twist......

    Cons: Nothing......

The Bee Gee's first professional worldwide release....in the summer of 1967.....the Brothers Gibb being in their early 20's....Poppy 'Beatlesque' harmonies and nothing like their disco work of the mid-late 1970's....worth a listen...! "Turn of the Century" starts it up and makes you familiar with the rest of the album....poppy easy going rock....."Holiday&qu
ot; is one of the highlights here.....very melodic and poppy....and very beautiful vocals, and yet so young sounding....beautiful arrangements too...."Red Chair Fade Away" gets a little more trippy....acidy sounding, but very effective. Some weird musical arrangements within it..."One Minute Woman" kinda drags along slower....but pretty cool song. "In My Own Time" reminds me terribley of The Beatles "Dr Robert" off their 'Revolver' album...same vocal approach and musical approach...but they pull it off. "Every Christian Lion Hearted Man Will Show You"....is VERY different than anything here....eartheral chanting and awesome lyrics....very surreal and different. "Craise Finton Kirk Royal Academy Of Arts" is really weird and something else like nothing here....seems to be a trick on the vocal track and and the catchy piano track and chorus really pulls you in.....:-) "New York Mining Disaster 1941"...what can I say about this song....was their first big hit and very out there....about a miner trapped in a cave-in and his last thoughts and words....'dont go talking to loud you might cause a landslide...mr jones....' "Cucumber Castle" is up next....and is pretty decent....average pop Bee Gees track for 1967. "To Love Sombody" is the next HUGE hit here....covered by tons of artists....personally I remembered it covered by Michael Bolton, awesome song....and sung best by the Brothers Gibb. The lyric alone....."I'm a man, can't you see What I am I live and breathe for you But what good does it do If I ain't got you, ain't got ?" how beautiful is that?...."I Close My Eyes" is another oft Bee Gees album track....but pretty cool...Beatles reminiscent. "I Can't See Nobody" is pretty good, as well as "Please Read Me"....the closer "Close Another Door"...awesome pop balladry from some aussie brothers....the love shows here, and its all pulled off great. Summing it up....The Bee Gees first professional album, actually in my opinion gave the Beatles 'hooks' a run for their money....get this.....you'll be VERY surprised! RR

The debut long-player by the Bee Gees may shock anyone who only remembers them for their mid- to late-'70s disco mega-hits, or their quirky early-'70s romantic balladry. Up until 1966, they'd shown a penchant for melodic songs and rich, high harmonies, in the process becoming Australia's answer to the Everly Brothers. When the brothers arrived in London late in 1966, however, they proved quick studies in absorbing and assimilating progressive pop and rock sounds around them. In one fell swoop, they became competitors to the likes of veteran rock bands such as the Hollies and the Tremeloes, and their debut long-player is more of a rock album than the group usually got credit for generating. Parts of it do sound very much like the Beatles circa Revolver, but there was far more to their sound than that. The three hits off of Bee Gees 1st, "To Love Somebody," "New York Mining Disaster 1941," and "Holiday," were gorgeous but relatively somber, thus giving Bee Gees 1st a melancholy cast, but... much of the rest is relatively upbeat psychedelic pop. "In My Own Time" may echo elements of "Dr. Robert" and "Taxman," but it's difficult to dislike a song with such delicious rhythm guitars and a great beat, coupled to the trio's soaring harmonies; "Every Christian Lion Hearted Man Will Show You" was closer in spirit to the Moody Blues of this era, opening with a Gregorian chant backed by a Mellotron, before breaking into a strangely spaced-out, psychedelic main song body. Robin Gibb's lead vocals veered toward the melodramatic and poignant, and the orchestra did dress up some of the songs a little sweetly, yet overall the group presented themselves as a proficient rock ensemble who'd filled their debut album with a full set of solid, refreshingly original songs. - Bruce Eder, All Music Guide Read more Less

Biography

Bee Gees

No popular music act of the '60s, '70s, '80s, or '90s attracted a more varied audience than the Bee Gees. Beginning in the mid to late '60s as a Beatlesque ensemble, they quickly developed as songwriters and singers to create a style of their own that carried them from psychedelia to progressive pop. Then, after hitting a popular trough, they reinvented themselves as pe... Read more
