    Re: Carly Simon's Masterpiece...THE BEDR

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Apr 2, 2001

Hello, if you're reading this, I wanted to comment on the album of 'The Bedroom Tapes' as well as your own commentary.I agree on most parts about how Carly's evolved her voice and her music through the decades. I just picked up her CD Box 'Clouds In... My Coffee', reminding me of how full her voice is and uses different styles of music. I now know every single song she's done.I'm impressed myself about 'The Bedroom Tapes.' It reminds me of some of her past songs from past records. 'So Many Stars', 'Scar', 'I'm Really The Kind', and 'Whatever Became Of Her' are still greats because it's a perfect compliment to her 70's soft contemporary tunes. All in all, I'm not at all picky about 'The Bedroom Tapes.' She writes such strong, yet gentle material. Your commentary about this album was very intelligent, so I felt a need to put in my own 2 cents. Thank you. Read more Less

    Carly Simon's Masterpiece...THE BEDROOM

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jul 8, 2000

THE BEDROOM TAPES is CARLY SIMON'S masterpiece. Experiencing writer's block and then depression,as a result of chemotherapy, Ms. Simon turned to her Muse for healing. The result is THE BEDROOM TAPES. She stowed away in her grown daughters's bedroom/...turned recording studio and delved into her pain, joy and history to record her most CARLY SIMON collection ever. This is a must for all CARLY fans. And it is this reviewers belief that it will draw to her new fans of all ages. CARLY, insightfully, entertains with the humourous and senusous BIG DUMB GUY, a sendup of our 'cybered' world. The song has a rock-sexy-bluesy feel. With creative, thoughtful support from ARISTA, this song could put Ms Simon back on the charts.Healing is a major theme in THE BEDROOM TAPES. 'SCAR', 'I’M REALLY THE KIND', 'CROSS THE RIVER', 'IN HONOR OF YOU, GEORGE' and 'I FORGET' all have healing themes. It is no small gift that an artist can translate their healing and experience through their music so beautifully as Ms. Simon. I challenge any listener to go unmoved after listening to these songs. Carly does not disappoint her fans with the song 'OUR AFFAIR’. A sexy, adult look at the erotic moments when the flirting and fire are still fresh....No one does this better! In ACTRESS, Carly paints a sly, revealing picture of those of us who wish to be the center of all things. Her vocal performance here is again stellar. In, WE YOUR DEAREST FRIENDS, Carly, passionately, tells the story of betrayal in friendship. In her words, ‘’I haven't made anything up here--it's all true. I wrote it about one specific friend who behaved like that towards me--it felt very good to write it, it was a cathartic experience to be able to say what I feared.’’ It is all too infrequently that Carly fans hear her sing like this. Finally, there is SO MANY STARS a song that grows and grows on the listener. After repeated listenings, I was reminded of the effect of Aretha Franklin's “You Make Me Feel (like a natural woman).” Those initial notes, the immediate soothing, the soul refreshed.............So Many Stars...but only one CARLY!Bill FaureSan Francisco Read more Less

  • All Music Guide

Accomplished singer/songwriter Carly Simon gets back to where it all started on her first brand new release of original material in six years, The Bedroom Tapes. She taps into the realm of traditional American music, continuing to draw inspiration from Broadway show tunes, jazz blues standards, folk-pop, and rock roll. She is as a raw as she was on 1975's Playing Possum and just as sweet as 1987's Coming Around Again, but Simon is fresh. Although in her mid-fifties, she is still a charmer. The Bedroom Tapes is pure, and Carly Simon proves herself to be well grounded. Not that listeners didn't already know that.
