    Rock my face off!

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Feb 22, 2004 | 7 out of 7 found this Beautiful Letdown review helpful

Pros: rock with a powerful message

Cons: maybe too poppy for my personal tastes sometimes.

People say a picture is worth a thousand words but a song is worth many more. The emotions each song stirs on Switchfoots "The Beautiful Letdown" is outstanding. Some of the songs just make you want to smile and dance like a fool. And other...s (Meant to Live) grind in your soul the angst to live for what really matters, to go above and beyond what society wants us to want in life. The song "Beautiful Letdown" gives out a similar cry to a different beat. It's a pretty laid back song that builds up to a mountain of passion. "Dare you to move" is a Switchfoot classic redone with more of an edge. The lyrics do the best at explaining what the song is all about " I Dare You to move, i dare you to life yourself up off the floor, like to day never happened before." And it cries "Where are you gonna go? Where are you Gonna go? Salvation is here!". This music motivates me to seek God more and helps me see more beauty in Him. Sylistically, they are everything from radio ready pop/rock to the nostalgic grunge groans of the 90's. The album starts off with a bang, brings you up, lets you down, and carries you away with the final track "24" about Jon's (the lead singer) journey through life and where he is at now at 24 and for what he longs more of "Spirit take me up in arms with you". This a "Beautiful" album. Read more Less

    good cd...but not perfect

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Mar 8, 2003 | 4 out of 8 found this Beautiful Letdown review helpful

This is a fun cd to listen to, but I dont think its as good as some of the critics are saying. I know Robin Parrish on cmcentral.com gave it a 99 out of 100 and said its the closest thing to perfect he has ever heard. I wouldnt go that far. If you... read the lyrics to the first three songs, they are saying essentially the same thing. Having a main theme or focus is one thing, but being repetitive is another. The cd does make you face some tough questions about where you are in life, but at times I think that the message is a little TOO obvious. I think that as I listen, instead of being drawn to it, its forced on me. SO for that reason, I think that this is a great cd to listen to, but its not a must have instant classic. As far as the music is concerned, its great straight forward rock with just enough diversity and experimenting to keep it interesting. I really like the chorus and background vocals in "The Beautiful Letdown". Thats a great song and is worth the price of admission by itself. Read more Less

    Switchfoot Rocks, Best Band Ever!

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Sep 29, 2003 | 2 out of 4 found this Beautiful Letdown review helpful

Pros: Lyrics, Sound, Spirit, Depth, Energy, Integrity

Cons: I don't get to see them enough

Swichfoot has been my favorite band for the past 7 years. The lyrics and style are unmatched by other bands.

The Beatles don't hold a candle to Switchfoot.

    worth more than money...

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Mar 2, 2004 | 1 out of 2 found this Beautiful Letdown review helpful

Pros: The production, hookiness, melodies, lyrics, and band make this album worth every penny and more....

Cons: There is absolutely nothing wrong with the cd.....I wish I could have heard more songs...

The production, hookiness, melodies, and lyrics in the songs makes this album worth every penny and more...I'm absolutely sick and tired of hearing bands and artists signed to Major Labels having the same theme of sex, drugs, alcohol, degrading w...omen, cars, money(bling-bling), and "love". This band is quite the opposite giving the audience a positive message in each of their songs and telling the audience that there is more to life then the things mentioned above. This was a characteristic of them that attracted me to Switchfoot. What attracted me to them even more was the way the songs were wrecklessly yet delicately crafted. The first time I heard the song "Gone", I was wide-eyed with excitement and joy. The poppiness and positive energy of the tune sparked something in my body as well as many other songs, but "Gone" was a real surprise for me. The eccentric drum grooves, thrashing guitars, thumping bass riffs, crystal clean guitars, as well as acoustic guitars, ease of singing along makes each song a definate song in itself all worthy of being a single or aired on the radio.Switchfoot's songs are not the typical verse/
    chorus/
    verse/
    instrumental(bridge)/
chorus structure, but very relaxed and free meaning they don't stick with one formula the entire album. Each song makes you want to listen to it over and over again, and I mean EACH AND EVERY SONG. It's that catchy. The album is not a clitche like most albums are in the music industry. The main purpose of this album is to tell the listener that there is more to life and the songs really hit you hard and make you think, "maybe there is more to life than now". If an album can do that while maintaing originality and tight melodies, then it sure is an album worth buying. If you buy this CD, YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT! Trust me!

You want to get challenge to think about

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Sep 17, 2003 | 1 out of 2 found this Beautiful Letdown review helpful

These guys have some of the most powerful lyrics I have heard in Christian music. Yes, Christian music! These guys love the Lord Jesus Christ! They are taunting (as my worship leader says) Christians and really everyone who lends an ear to their m...usic to "live for so much more" than "this world has to offer." They inform us that by living so entranced by the "symphony of modern humanity," (AKA the world) we are setting ourselves up for a let down when we get to end...but as Switchfoot says it, it is actually such a glorious, "beautiful let down." By asking Christ into our hearts, we will finally be able to look back and see the gunk we were living in and then see the glowing face of Christ that awaits us in the eternity of heaven. These guys do such a musically amazing job at saying that all these things we search for ("money...girls...hu
ndred dollar bills...fame, and rock-n-roll, and thrills") will one day be just "like yesterday...saturday...su
mmer break...gone." If you are looking for a band that is not afraid to urge this world to look up to something (or Someone, rather) worth so much more than what we humans put all of our time, energy, and affections into, or if you are curious about all this stuff I just talked about and want to be challenged to think about you life, get the CD. "This is YOUR life. Are you who you want to be?" Switchfoot (and ultimately and most importantly GOD)says "[You] were meant to live for SO MUCH MORE??" I pray that you do. Discover Who you are living for......................
