Here's one of my favorite albums from one of my favorite rock bands. I have this in original stereo vinyl pressing and have been thinking about getting this on CD. I never really did like CDs because of the sometimes crudding transfer that allows too much tape hiss to be heard.
The songs are original, most of them were written in India at the time while each was forming their own distinctive style. Well, and a lot of drugs helped them compose and record the uneven sounds on this album.
Yoko Ono was a constant presence in the studio while making this record and the tensions can be heard on tracks "Why Don't We Do It In The Road" and "Long Long Long." "Revolution 9 really lets down this album with John and Yoko experimenting with tape loops and voicings which can be heard throughout their Unfinished Music #1: Two Virgins LP that was released that same year.
The folky songs are there like "Mother Nature's Son", "Julia", "I Will", and "Dear Prudence." The screaming bloody rock and roll classics like "Helter Skelter" and "Everybody's Got Something To Hide Except For Me And My Monkey" are great, too. I think the Ringo-sung "Good Night" is a sweet lullaby but his stab at country in the form of "Don't Pass Me By" is boring.
It is a serious listen for Beatles fans. This was recorded while the guys were going through their not-so-happy-to-be-a-grou
p time in their careers. Abbey Road is better, and Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band is the best by far of any Beatles album ever pressed.
Pros: Very varied and mixed array of songs...
Cons: Nothing really....
My 100th review....what better way to do it than my first proper Beatles review? 30 songs here....25 by Lennon/McCartney...but actually mainly solo pieces...whoever sang what...was them that basically wrote it...4 by Harrison, 1 written by Starr. Some standouts, some average tracks...but all nontheless interesting, alot of this was basically written while the Beatles were in India with the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi studying Transcendental Meditation.
We'll do the album version....4 sides.
Side 1 kicks off with the obvious Beach Boys sendup "Back in the USSR"....I hear Ringo isnt even on this one cause of a feud with the rest of the guys...but he was back pretty quickly obviously, this song seagues off into the next track "Dear Prudence" written I believe about Mia Farrow's sister Prudence who was at the India resort but was scarely seen anywhere...sung pretty good and good track. "Glass Onion" is next and there is alot of references in it to other Beatle songs such as "Fool on the hill" and "Strawberry Fields Forever"...decent song sung by Lennon and cool ending to it..."Obla-Di Obla-Da" is more bouncy poppy stuff sang by Mccartney...was the theme song to that old tv show "Life Goes On"...cool song, not bad....more of a well known one here. "Wild Honey Pie" is kinda a throw away...kinda weird, pretty forgettable....into "The Continuing story of Bungalow Bill" which is a funny kinda sing along song with everyone present including Yoko Ono which you can hear her high pitched vocals in the chorus, sounds like a little girl's actually. The next song is one of the best here...."While my Guitar Gently Weeps" penned by George Harrison with some guest guitar work by Eric Clapton...easily outdoes half of Lennon and Mccartney's work here....which shows how far he was really coming by 1968. "Happiness is a Warm Gun" is a Lennon song...pretty cool, but average.
Side 2 kicks off with the McCartney song "Martha my Dear" about his dog I believe...kinda sappy and not the best...but works. "I'm So Tired" is a Lennon song...pretty decent with cool lyrics, "Blackbird" is next by McCartney, more of a well known tune and one of Charlie Mansons songs where he predicted the end with racial tension...hence "Black"...in his twisted mind. "Rocky Racoon" is next...a countryish kinda feel of a song sung by Paul, pretty good, very different. "Piggies" by Harrison and badly misinterperted by Manson as 'piggies' as in wealthy people...but wasnt. "Dont Pass Me By" is the first penned Ringo Starr song and not a bad one at that....with some hoe-downish violin playing at the end, kooky lryics and written as early as 1964 I believe. "Why Dont We Do It In The Road" is basically that....the only lyrics and lasts like a minute....but pretty effective...screamed by Paul basically..with participation by 1 other member, I know only 2 are present. "I Will" is another McCartney tune, short and simple, not bad. "Julia" is by Lennon...a tribute to his deceased mother, very touching and sad to listen to.
Side 3..."Birthday".
..a very popular song played on birthdays...rocks and is very short and effective. "Yer Blues" is really cool and more down and dirty...a rarity by this time with the fab four, alot of chemistry going on in this song. "Mother Natures Son" is sung by Paul and is very cool, an ode to the Indian guy I believe..."Everybody
s got something to hide except me and my monkey" has got to be the longest song title...pretty cool song though kinda Monkees sounding, but cool. "Sexy Sadie" is sung by John...decent track and something of course Manson named one of his women. "Helter Skelter" is probaly the heaviest song ever done by the Beatles...very loud and hard,
Pros: Lots of good songs
Cons: none really
As a Beatles fan, I have nearly every Bealtes EP from "Please Me Please Me" to "Let It Be". I must say that this is one hell of an album. There are tons of good songs such as "While By Guitar Gently Weeps", "Back To The USSR", and "Helter Skelter". This album shows the Beatles at their full experiemental mode. Although "Sgt.Peppers Lonely Hearts Band" , and "Revolver" may have been the first records they did different experientation on, this album truely shows them at their peak of creativity. Songs like "Obla Di Ob La Da", and "Revolution 9" are probably good examples of how this album is different than their first record which contained more simplistic songs such as "Love Me Do", and "Do You Want To Know A Secret?". Overall, a great Beatles record.
Some people say that the Beatles should have released the best songs here on a single album and disposed of the rest. I for one agree with them.
Don't get me wrong, I absolutely adore the Beatles, but that doesn't necessarily mean that I agree with every decision they ever made. That said, If you can pick up this somewhat patchy collection for the price of a single album, by all means snap it up immediately. After all, when it's good, it's great. But when it's bad... well, just ask Paulthebuilder!
P.S, 'Birthday' is absolutely Fantastic!
Really great music, the fab four really explore diffrent sounds and diffrent ways to making music which is aparent in every song startin from Back in the USSR to Helter Skelter. On of the best albums of all time and has set the bar for all bands to follow.
IF I WANT TO GET TO SLEEP FAST I WOULD PUT THIS ON/BUT THEN I DON;T HAVE IT SO AS IT WOULD ALSO BORE ME
wide selection with complete listings of songs on cd/album. makes it easy to find an old favorite when you can only remember either the title or album title alone.
i like this one too OFCOURSE the first cd is way better than the 2nd one though songs like 1 3 4 7 9 10 11 12 14 16 17 RULE the others are good as well but not as good
but it is certainly not their best
Any people out there who smoke weed listen to this album, but beware of Revolution #9. It may be too much for some.
This isn't my favorite Beatles album, there's so much crap on this album. They should have released it on single record and made one good compilataion .
This is maybe the Beatles masterpiece. It changed rock history. Everything is amazing in it, just buy it
This is one of the Beatles best. Some groundbreaking material here that changed rock.
THIS ALBUM IS ON THE PURPLE CAPITOL LABEL IN MY COLLECTION OF OVER 500 VINYL RECORD ALBUMS. MY STEREO MAKES MY FABULOUS ALBUMS SOUND LIKE NEW A FEW SCRATCHES. SORRY NOT FOR SALE I TREASURE MY BABIES.
For a band that was previously known by many for slickly produced (i.e. Seargent Pepper's) and sometimes sappy pop rock (i.e. A Hard Day's Night), The White Album permanently placed The Beatles in a whole new light to rock music fans...It established them as not just the best looking or most radio welcome POP bands but as one of the best if not the best ROCK band in the world. Where Seargent Pepper's was sonically and melodically superior to previous albums, The White Album pushed their musical and song writing boundaries into beautifully powerful uncharted rock territories. Unlike previous Beatles albums which seemed to center more around the radio single there are more than a few harder rocking, experimental, and less radio friendly songs such as Revolution 1, Helter Skelter, Yer Blues, Happiness is a Warm Gun, and Revolution 9. These type of songs, although hinted at on earlier records such as Revolver and Rubber Soul, did not come to fruition until the White Album. The addition of this style to Beatles songwriting repertoire greatly contributed to the diversity and appeal of The White album. Its influence on the rock music that has followed is immeasureable.
Of course on The White Album as with every Beatles record there are plenty of the type of sweetly melodic songs the Beatles were known for such as While my Guitar Gently Weeps, Blackbird, and Mother Nature's Son.
The combination of hard rockers, mellow mid-tempos, and everything in between makes the White Album a collection of songs as diverse and strong as any album ever recorded. From Back in the USSR to Good Night it takes the listener on a trip full of emotions and surprises with each and every irresistibly inviting turn. No one song is at all like the next however like any great record there seems to be a common yet inexplicable thread throughout tying it all together into an intriguing and thought provoking musical package. The thing I find particularly amazing is that although there are 30 songs on the record it seems neither too long nor too short - another attribute of a great record. Songs such as Dear Prudence, Birthday, and Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da are both like nothing you've ever heard before and yet somehow sound strangely familiar - an important charteristic of great songs.
The White Album, which I believe to be the most creatively diverse and powerful of all the great Beatles records, was a triumphant turning point in their career and spurred them down the path towards more classic however I believe less groundbreaking work on Let it Be and Abbey Road.
i loved all the harrison contributions
the beatles show their excellence on every track. i might have tossed Goodnight into the dustbin in favor of one more classic song like What's the New Mary Jane, but all else is perfect
love the fiddle here, the album has too many songs, most are good. revolution nine sucks.
Please Mr. Paul
One great song after another, I can't get enough of this awesome music!! Harrison's "my guitar gently weeps" and "savoy truffle" are awesome. "Glass Onion", "Helter Skelter" "Me and My Monkey" just rock!!!! Each song has it's own flavor and is wonderful to listen to. This album is packed so full of great music you can't stop listening to it. A must have to your Beatle collection.
Has to be their best if I had to choose one.
It's hard to choose a favorite. This record covers so much ground that I reluctantly chose this as my favorite. It is their coolest record, most hip, but......no, I was going to give balance to this review, but I can't. It's just great. It may take a few listens, especially if all you know of the Beatles is their earlier stuff, but you'll get into it eventually. 'Sexy Sadie' and 'Happiness is a Warm Gun' are my favorites on the record, but I also love 'Mother Nature's Son' and 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps'. What a fantastic record.
